Location of Metro station

Solférino is a station of the Paris Métro, named after the Battle of Solférino. It is served by Line 12.

[edit] History

Solférino is located on Line 12, which was, at its inauguration on November 5, 1910, known as Line A of the Compagnie Nord-Sud (North-South Company), headed by Jean-Baptiste Berlier. This company had begun as a rival of the Compagnie du chemin de fer métropolitain de Paris (CMP), which was headed by the original engineer of the Métro, Fulgence Bienvenüe, and had constructed the first six lines of the Paris Métro between 1899 and 1906. The Compagnie Nord-Sud built Line 12 and what is now Line 13 (but originally known as Line B) between Montmartre and Montparnasse. These two companies were merged into the RATP (Régie autonome des transports parisiens) in 1948, which now operates the entire Métro network and some of the RER lines with the SNCF. As such, the tilework of the interior of the stations of both Line 12 and Line 13 carries the interlocking "N-S" logo of the Compagnie Nord-Sud. The ironwork of the entrances to the stations of Lines 12 and 13 are also often different from those of other Métro stations for the same reason.
