Solar roof shingles play two roles. The first role is to be the roof shingles, exactly as regular roof shingles. The second role the shingles have is as photovoltaic cells (PV). The solar roof shingles convert the sun rays into electricity and use it to power some or all of residential electricity needs. The amount of electricity that the solar shingles will produce depends on several factors like direct sun hours in the area, solar cells efficiency, surface of solar panels, climate just to name a few.
Solar panels that produce electricity also known as photovoltaic cells are only one component of a residential solar power system. The solar roofing shingles are the solar panels in the system. Recent development in the solar energy market brought the thin film solar panels which now is deployed in solar roof shingles and make them more efficient than they used to be in the past.
