Solar Pyramid
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Solar Pyramid is a giant sundial and is set to be the UK's largest sculpture. It will also become the UK’s largest artwork, the world’s biggest functioning timepiece, and the world's largest sundial.
Astronomically unique, visitors will be able to walk the ‘Equation of Time’ on a giant piazza (designed by Dr. Robin Catchpole) at the base of the structure, enabling visitors to follow the sun’s shadow.
It is made up of three towers, or gnomons, which lean together, creating an illusion of a pyramid. The steel superstructure of each blade like tower will be clad in stainless steel, coloured and highly polished form a mirror, which will capture the sun and the changing landscape.
The main gnomon will cast its shadow across the elliptical base (piazza), which is marked out to show astronomical and chronological information. The two secondary towers will be in alignment with the extremes of sunrise and sunset at the summer solstice.
