Sofia Reyes is a fictional recurring character in the American dramedy series Ugly Betty. She is portrayed by Salma Hayek, who is also one of the co-producers on Ugly Betty. Hayek's performance as Sofia has resulted in a nomination for outstanding guest actress in a Comedy series at the 59th Primetime Emmy Awards. The character of Sofia Reyes was initially going to be made a series regular, but this didn't occur due to Salma's pregnancy.
[edit] Background
Sofia Reyes is a beautiful best-selling author who launches a new magazine being published by Meade Publications called MYW ("Modern Young Woman"). When Sofia appears in the lobby of the Meade Publications offices, Daniel Meade is instantly attracted to her. Daniel tries to pursue Sofia, but she is put off by his reputation as a womanizer. Friction between the two heats up until the two make love, where thereafter Sofia reveals to Daniel that she has a boyfriend, Hunter. Sofia has accepted Hunter's wedding proposal, but Daniel is hoping that she will reconsider since he thinks she still has feelings for him.
Sofia is also worshipped by Betty Suarez, who sees her as a role model after reading her best-sellers as a source of inspiration. Also because Sofia came to her rescue after looking at a hotel review Betty wrote that had initially been rejected by Daniel and letting her know that she would publish it in MYW. Betty's friendship with Sofia has Daniel fearing that his staffers will be lured over to MYW by her. Sofia had already offered Betty a job at the magazine that promised her an assistant in a year.
However it turns out that Sofia was playing both Betty and Daniel. In the episode Sofia's Choice, Sofia reveals that she was using Daniel as the subject for MYW's premiere issue, titled "From Fling to Ring in 60 Days." At the same time Sofia lured Betty into working with her as a distraction. Betty finds out that Hunter was actually a male stripper after seeing Sofia handing him money outside his place of work. Betty questions Sofia about her motives, just as Daniel finally asked her to marry him. Sofia attempts to stop Betty from telling Daniel. Nonetheless Sofia exposes her true intentions on a nationally televised talk show and breaks the engagement, thus resulting in Daniel lashing out at her and Betty quitting MYW. Ultimately, it is Amanda waiting for Sofia in the elevator ready to beat her up, fitting since it all began there the day she showed up at Meade Publications.
[edit] Sofia's article
Here is the groundwork that Sofia used to lure Daniel into her scheme, as uncovered by Betty:
"From Fling To Ring In 60 Days: The Rules of Getting Any Guy to Propose to You in 60 Days or Less"
- 1. Pique his interest. (Sofia taking off her blouse in the elevator)
- 2. Stay in close proximity. (Sofia commandeering MODE's boardroom)
- 3. Give him a taste. (Sofia seducing him at the bar)
- 4. Make yourself unavailable. (Sofia dancing with Hunter)
- 5. Give him a ticking clock. (Sofia's ultimatum in the limo)
[edit] Connections
- Bradford Meade - Daniel's father and president of Meade Publications; He was responsible for convincing Sofia to start the new magazine.
- Ruthie - Sofia's assistant; She is the spitting image of Betty to the point that she acts just like her. She also took the job that Betty was going to take after Sofia offered to her.
- Hunter - Allegedly a Peace Corps worker and Sofia's boyfriend, who just asked her to marry him, but is not sure because of her attraction to Daniel. In reality he is a stripper at a club called Boylesque who was hired by Sofia as part of her plan to ensnare Daniel.
- Amanda Tanen - Receptionist at MODE; In "Trust, Lust, and Must", she was the catylst that resulted in Amanda losing her chance to win Daniel's heart. Upon discovering that Sofia was actually using Daniel as the subject of an article for her new magazine in "Sofia's Choice", Amanda took her revenge out on Sofia at the elevator (where it all started in "Trust") by beating her up.
