Sodium manganate

Sodium manganate (Na2MnO4) is a deep green chemical compound most often used as a reagent. It is closely related to the salt K2MnO4.

Classically, it was produced by the reaction between pure manganese dioxide, (MnO2) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) at high heat in the presence of an oxidant, leading to a thermal fusion. The oxidant could be either a nitrate salt (e.g., NaNO3), or air/O2 sparged into the mixture. A thermal fusion between these reactants leads to the deep green Sodium Manganate.

Sodium manganate is unstable except in basic solutions. Its main use is in the production of sodium permanganate by electrolytic oxidation.

Sodium manganate may also be produced by reduction of sodium permanganate under basic conditions.
