[edit] Saros project

This article represents a draft attempt to build up an eclipse database using templates, specifically for lunar eclipses, but may be extended to solar later.

The result will allow dynamic generation of lunar eclipse data:

  • Stat tables per event
  • Chronological summary tables
  • Saros series tables

[edit] work log

  • 3/20/08 - Test templates created (below).
    • I hand-entered 3 eclipses andI substituted stat tables into articles.
      • I decided to group databases by saros series so each won't be too long. Event names are defined by digits for: <year><mt>.
    • I decided to make six copies: {past, future}x{total, partial, penumbral}. Past events can have a photo. Partial and penumbral eclipses have less data to display.
      • I may need to double again (to 12) if I included events outside of 1901-2100 where I have more data to include.
    • I experimented adding "last/next" event fields, cute, but unsure value. They are nicer if near the top, so their screen positions stay fixed, while now they'll move up/down based on heights of images.
    • I have eclipse Excel data from 1501-2500, which I can export into a Template format, but delaying until I finalize the data I want.

  • 3/21/08 - Expanded stub articles for range May 2003-Dec 2011
    • Plan - Handcode one lunar eclipse stat table for each Saros series, then write code to process Excel data into template libraries for each Saros series in 1501-2500, and all event articles in the range 1980-2020 and total/partial events in 1901-2100 (with graphics). THEN create template table list articles on each Saros series.
    • SockPuppetForTomruen (talk) 06:12, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
  • 3/27/08 - Added complete listing of Saros cycle 121, for a first test, static data, but nearly ready to copy data into a database template. SockPuppetForTomruen (talk) 01:22, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
  • 4/8/08 - test table User:SockPuppetForTomruen/Total lunar eclipses 2001-2010.
  • 4/23/08 - add series set template test: Template:Lunar_eclipse_set_1998-2002

[edit] Lunar eclipse articles

There's 42 active Saros series, grouped into 5 sets, each containing 8 or 9 series, and index incrementing by 5. The 5 sets can overlap when there's two penumbral eclipses in two months in a row.
