Socorro is a city in El Paso County, Texas, United States. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 27,152. It is part of the El Paso Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Socorro is located at 31°38′29″N, 106°16′29″W (31.641340, -106.274756)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 17.5 square miles (45.4 km²), all of it land.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 27,152 people, 6,756 households, and 6,188 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,551.0 people per square mile (598.7/km²). There were 7,140 housing units at an average density of 407.8/sq mi (157.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 73.41% White, 0.35% African American, 1.34% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 22.03% from other races, and 2.78% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 96.43% of the population.

There were 6,756 households out of which 56.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.4% were married couples living together, 17.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 8.4% were non-families. 7.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 2.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 4.02 and the average family size was 4.20.

In the city the population was spread out with 36.1% under the age of 18, 11.5% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 18.2% from 45 to 64, and 6.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 27 years. For every 100 females there were 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $24,087, and the median income for a family was $24,336. Males had a median income of $19,063 versus $15,079 for females. The per capita income for the city was $7,287. About 30.9% of families and 32.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 40.3% of those under age 18 and 26.5% of those age 65 or over.
