SPACE, the Society for Promotion of Alternative Computing and Employment is an initiative of a community of software professionals and technologists aspiring to build a novel IT industry that is creative and socially relevant. SPACE envisages to bring the benefits of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to a larger section of society by promoting employment and development through FOSS. It aims to address the special needs of Kerala such as local language computing and will act as a link between Kerala and the FOSS Community around the world.

[edit] Free Software, Free Society

The Free Software, Free Society (FSFS) Conference, organized by Government and civil society organizations from Brazil, Italy, Venezuela and India, is scheduled for 28-30 May 2005 in the Southern Indian city of Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), the capital of the province of Kerala. The Conference is primarily an attempt to initiate a South-South-North dialogue on the use of Free Software as a useful paradigm for non-software realms and its role as an instrument for development. In the process, the countries involved will share their perspective and experiences in using Free Software.

[edit] FOSS in Science

FOSS in Science is a national workshop being organised by the Union Christian College, Aluva, Kerala State, in collaboration with the Society for Promotion of Alternative Computing and Employment (SPACE) and Free Software Foundation of India (FSFI).

The three-day workshop will focus on the relevance of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) in science education, scientific research and scientific computing. This is the first such workshop to be conducted in India, and is aimed at introducing FOSS to college teachers, doctoral students, research workers and others.

SPACE published a study report on the usage of Free Software in public enterprises of Kerala. The book was formally released by Honourable Chief Minister Sri. V. S. Achuthanandan by handing over a copy to Sri. Richard M. Stallman in an event organized by SPACE few months back.
