The Socialist Party of Michigan (SPMI) is the state chapter of the Socialist Party USA in the U.S. state of Michigan. The current SPMI was organized following the dissolution of the Socialist Party of America and its reformation in 1973.
The Socialist Party of Michigan engages in both electoral politics and non-electoral activism. Non-electoral activism includes support for unions and unionization, anti-war and anti-imperialist agitation, support for feminism and women's rights, and regular forums, literature distributions, and demonstrations. The Socialist Party of Michigan also publishes the quarterly magazine, The Michigan Socialist
In 2004 the SPMI petitioned for the approximately 30,000 signatures required for major party recognition, but was unsuccessful. Additionally during the 2004 elections, Ben Burgis ran as a Socialist/Green candidate for Michigan State University Trustee, receiving nearly 75,000 votes.
Electoral activities in 2006 included Matt Erard's campaign for the Michigan State House of Representatives in the 53rd District in Ann Arbor and Jacob Woods' run for the State Board of Education. In August 2006 the Socialist Party of Michigan hosted the Socialist Party USA's biennial Organizing Conference in Detroit. SPMI has a chartered local in Kalamazoo
It has since joined the Michigan Third Parties Coalition.[1]
