The Social Democratic Party of America is a newly formed political oganization in the United States drawn from the last remnants of the Social Democrats USA, as well as from other Socialist and Social Democratic elements. The organization announced a national convention for August 30 - September 1, 2008.
The organizations's ideologies are both democratic socialism and social democracy, and are briefly encapsulated in the membership pledge of their membership form. The SDPPA, Social Democratic Party of Pennsylvania is claiming the Social Democrats USA seat in the Socialist International based upon their members' previous history of membership in the SI via the Social Democrats USA.[1] The roots of the orgaization are to be found in a grouping formerly known as the Social Democratic Party of Pennsylvania[citation needed], which were the primary vestiges remaining of the Social Democrats, USA.
The orgaization's membership is also drawn from Labor activists, Greens, religious progressives, and others.[2] While there are ongoing talks with the Socialist International, the SI does not list the Social Democrats USA as a member.[3] Yet on the SI Member Parties of the Socialist International[4] a fourth red dot appears in the Johnstown, PA city where the home office of the SDoA is located without reason.
