"So Emotional" is a song recorded by American singer Whitney Houston. The song was the third single from her second album Whitney, and was released in November of 1987.

"So Emotional" was written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, who also wrote Madonna's "Like a Virgin." and Linda Ronstadt's How do I Make You" Originally, the uptempo track was intended to have a Prince-like sound. However, upon hearing Narada Michael Walden's version of song, they felt he took the power and bite of the song. The song centers on Houston loving being in love, saying "I get so emotional/every time I think of you/I get so emotional/Ain't it shocking what love can do". The song was added at last minute on the lp Whitney, Clive Davis thinking that it needed an additional uptempo number. A longer remixed version was available on a 12", remixed by Shep Pettibone. It includes too an a cappella version titled «The voice». In 1996 the song was remixed by Dave Morales. An edit of this remix was included on the international version of the compilation Whitney: The Greatest Hits. The full-length 11 min. remix was available on the vinyl box-set The unreleased mixes and on a 3-cd special edition box-set of Whitney: The Greatest Hits distributed in Circuit City Stores.

[edit] Chart information

At this time Houston had had a string of five consecutive number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Pressure was on Houston to deliver another number one hit with "So Emotional", so that she could tie for the record of most consecutive number ones (held by The Bee Gees and The Beatles at the time).[citation needed]

The song lived up to expectations, as "So Emotional" reached number one on the Billboard Charts from January 9 to January 15, 1988, the first number-one single of 1988. "So Emotional" reached number two on the Hot 100 Airplay and number one on the Billboard Hot 100 Single Sales for two weeks, eventually receiving gold certification. The single remained in the Top 40 for fourteen weeks, and reached number one on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play chart.

Internationally, the single returned Houston to the top ten in the United Kingdom, peaking at number five, but did moderately elsewhere, reaching twenty-one in France, twenty-six in Australia and thirty in Switzerland.

[edit] Music video

The music video (directed by Wayne Isham) for "So Emotional" is straightforward, with Houston singing about her experience with love, and how love can do crazy things to people. The video's footage is from a Houston concert at Stabler Arena in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

[edit] Charts

"So Emotional" was ranked sixth on The Billboard Hot 100 year-end charts (1988), and remained in The Billboard Hot 100 for eighteen weeks.

"So Emotional" was Houston's sixth number-one single on The Billboard Hot 100, her fifth on The Billboard Hot 100 Single Sales, and her second on The Billboard Hot Club/Dance Play Charts.

While performing Live, Houston often sings a lower harmony and lets her background vocalists sing the "ain't it shocking what" portion of the chorus. In an antiphonic manner, she responds, "love can do?".
