A snowball is a Baltimore & New Orleans tradition and is similar to a snowcone. A snow cone is a paper cone filled with crushed ice topped with flavored sugar water. A snowball on the other hand is a styrofoam cup or Chinese food container filled with soft shaved ice and flavored syrup or creamed flavoring that can be topped with even more sweets (or marshallow in Baltimore). The quality of the ice is important, it should be like soft fresh snow. If it is the right consistency it will mix with the flavoring and be like an icy drink rather than a crunchy sweet.
