[edit] Characters
- Gudrun: Gudrun is an evil sorceress from the far away kingdom of the Snow-walkers. Legend has it that the Jarl, before Ragnar, sent and army to attack the Snow-walkers, but the attack failed when the army marched into a strange mist and never returned. One man, Ragnar, came back and with him he brought Gudrun. They wed, and Gudren ruled with fear and sorcery until the son she had banished returned. She can cause pain, twist minds, and steal souls out of living men. It is said that her reflection will destroy her.
- Jessa Horolfsdaughter: Jessa is the daughter of a deceased Wulfing-man who was killed in the great battle between Ragnar and the Wulfings. She plays a large role over the course of the book.
- Kari Ragnarsson: Kari is the son of Gudrun the Snow-walker and Ragnar. In his early years his mother kept him in a cold dungeon. she left him there unable to speak, run, or even think. At age six he was banished to Thrasirshall with Brocheal Gunnarsson. It was there that Brocheal taught him how to live by showing him love and kindness. The two are inseparable. For years Gudrun let rumors run, and soon the people believed him to be a monster. In reality Kari is simply is mother's reflection; they look exactly alike and they have the very same powers, but just like a reflection, they are complete opposites.
- Skapti: Skapti is Wulfgar's friend and a skald. He is first seen as a peddler that assisted in the escape of Wulfgar Osricsson. He later is revealed as a skald and old friend of Brocheal Gunnarson and Kari Ragnarsson.
- Brocheal Gunnarsson: Brocheal is a large red haired man that was banished into exile by the Jarl and Gudrun. As further punishment, he was assigned to be the caretaker of the Jarl's son, rumored to be a monster. He becomes extremely attached to the boy and becomes something of a father to him. He goes wherever Kari goes.
- Wulfgar Oscrisson: Wulfgar is the last member of the Wulfings family, a family that had always been the Jarl's family until Ragnar was unfairly named Jarl. With the help of Kari and friends he becomes Jarl.
- Hakon: A freed thrall, or slave. He is freed when he helps save the Jarlsrealm in the second book. He is easily scared but can be brave. Hakon is good friends with Jessa and Kari, although he is slightly afaird of Kari. He is slowly becoming a skilled warrior; his sword is named Dream Breaker, after it prevents him from dying like he did in a dream. People call him Hakon Empty-Hand.
