The Snooker World Cup was a snooker tournament (created by Mike Watterson, who also organised the UK Championship and who brought the World Snooker Championship to the Crucible) which featured a team of three players representing their country.
A little bit like the Davis Cup in tennis, it started in 1979 as the State Express World Team Cup before becoming the State Express World Team Classic in 1981 until 1983. In 1985, The event moved from an early to late season and the tournament became a knockout contest rather than a round robin as it was previously. It was renamed the World Cup again and during the run in the late 80's.
After British American Tobacco which State Express was one of their trade names pulled out of all sport sponsorships in the UK in 1984 It had different sponsors such as Guinness, Car Care Plan, Tuborg and Fersina Windows before the event was removed in 1990.
It did make a brief return in 1996 when it was held in Bangkok in Thailand and sponsored by Castrol-Honda.
Steve Davis has won the most time with 4 titles for England.
