[edit] Bharat Rakshak
Thanks! I found it when I was working through the backlog because this version led to it being categorized here as an article with original research. I realised there were some sources and it could be a good article/stub so I added what I could. I admit, I'm entirely unfamiliar with the subject so there may be information I missed. Is it a pet project of yours? Travellingcari (talk) 21:05, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
I remembered I'd found additional sources if you/know anyone who can read Russian or Chinese. I have fun working on articles I'm not too familiar with because I often learn something Travellingcari (talk) 21:41, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
- Oh well I tried, there seems to be an agenda at work, and I'm not familiar enough with the topic to even counter it. I'm going to let this one be. Travellingcari (talk) 22:06, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
It seems like you have access to good content, and waiting out a cooling off period sounds good for all, including your own sanity! Please let me know if I can help in any way with your work on the article. Travellingcari (talk) 00:19, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi Sniperz! I have a bit of a favor to ask you. I came across Blathur as I worked through the back log. Unfortunately the article is in such a state that I can't made heads or tales of it and Google isn't much help. I recognise that India is an extremely large country and not everyone is familiar with all parts of the country, but I thought maybe through your other WP contributions, you might know someone who could help if you can't yourself. Thanks! Travellingcari (talk) 19:40, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
- I just saw that and left a note on the AfD, thanks for your assistance. I couldn't tell whether there was anything salvageable amid the mess of "content". Have a good day (? not sure what time time difference is, it's currently 4:15 PM here in New York. Travellingcari (talk) 21:16, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
-
- I just saw the creator's name, which matches the article. Odd. This article says "bored kid" more loudly than "encyclopedia" anyway. NY is chilly, average is about 4-6 degrees Celsius but we've had some odd weather (closer to 20 degrees) and relatively little snow, knock on wood. Are you behind or ahead? It's still Thursday here (unfortunately ;) ). NY is also very pretty -- especially at Christmas. Have you ever been to NY or the US? I've never been to India but it's on my list of places I really want to go. Travellingcari (talk) 21:29, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

- What do you want to study? I'm currently finishing my graduate work in tourism development at NYU's SCPS and I really enjoy it, although I'm worried about the economy. I'm also working at New York City's official tourism marketing agency doing cultural programming, which I enjoy. Never been to Sri Lanka or Malaysia, closest I've come is Singapore. One day! - Electronics always sounds like a good job, good prospects and hopefully you could attend conferences or work internationally. Tourism is good and strong, but we'll see what happens with discretionary income, although some of our markets have rebounded. It can be hard to balance the two, especially at times like now when it's just gone 5pm and I want to go home but have class until 8:30 pm. If I don't catch you before I leave, I'll touch base later. - Yeah someone mentioned the article from Hindu, I was just surprised that a town which is claimed as a strong hold has such little coverage. I wonder whether there may be non-English sources, although I've found in the course that a lot of India-based information meant to be accessible to others is as available in English as not to help overcome the interstate language barriers and to reach internationally. It makes research for school as well as Wiki easier. :) What holiday are you celebrating? Travellingcari (talk) 04:01, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
Vacations are great, no matter what the reason :) While I generally agree with the WIki guideline that all villages are notable, this is one of those times where it's not so great --- we shouldn't have to dig so hard to find *something* to put in an article just for the sake of having an article. It shoud/could be deleted until someone wants to write it. There will never be an article on every single village in the world and I think not deleting for policy is a bad reason to keep this one, but them's the rules ;) Off to work , TGIF! Travellingcari (talk) 12:37, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
Just giving you a heads up that I essentially blanked Blathur, save for the info box you added since it's the only content we have. There was nothing salvageable in the previous article so I figure when/if sources are found, we can go from scratch. Hope you've had a good week! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Travellingcari (talk • contribs) 22:13, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:FIDSNS Logo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot (talk) 01:39, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Sanskrit vs Devanagari
Hi, I don't really get what you mean. The terms are written in Devanagari script, so it should be (Devanagari: ...). In Sanskrit or Hindi that would mean (...). With reference to your examples, names derived from Punjabi should be written in Gurmukhi script; likewise names from Malayalam ahould be written in Malayalam script. I understand that the reason these are inserted is to provide the actual writing of the word in the language it is from. So whether it is from Punjabi, Malayalam or Tamil, it should be in its native script and not necessarily Hindi. From what I know writings should be identified by the writing system. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks and have a nice day. S3000 ☎ 11:25, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
- Well I get your point. You prioritise ease of understanding over facts (which others may find difficult to understand) which seems logical. I've reverted my edits to the Agni and Prithvi missile pages to the earlier form. I leave it to you if you wanna make the text in script link to the script in question, though theres no compulsion to do so from my side. Have a nice day! S3000 ☎ 15:58, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

Thank you, I was unaware of his biography, and if I was I would have been more careful in evaluating the source. In this case, however, I think on reflection that certain points still apply: First, thatthe ICHR is not an academic body, but a political one; second, that the reliability of a source depends not only on the author but also on the publisher; and third, that this is being used for an unusual claim, which should be impeccably sourced, and preferably to a peer-reviewed academic press or journal. If no such source is available for a subject that has been amply studied, I think that it should not be included. (And definitely doesn't belong in the lead, but that's another matter.)
Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Relata refero (talk) 11:58, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Forest Rights Act
SniperZ, could you take a look at the Forest Rights Act page? It's in pretty bad shape, and far beyond of my area of knowledge of India, tribla groups, or environmental law. It might be beyond yours too, but perhaps you know another editor who would be good at improving this page. The main problems I saw are wikification, and the fact that the Lead doesn't really make it clear what nation the Act is from, nor does the title. There may also be POV problems inthe text. THe good think is that is has a lot of citations, which is geneally something these types of article lack. I've posted a generic {{WPINDIA}} project tag on the talk page, and a fairly caustic note there to try to make a point with the creator, but no malice is intended by me in the note. Thanks. - BillCJ (talk) 17:28, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Sitara
Hello, may I ask if the word 'Sitara' is in any Sanskrit dictionary? I.e. is it a Sanskrit word? This is because there seems to be a problem on the HJT-36 Sitara page, where some users are claiming the word is either Persian or from Hindi/Urdu. I can't verify as Hindi/Sanskrit isn't my native language. Thanks. S3000 ☎ 17:47, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for stepping in on this "disagreement". I have no knowledge/background whatsoever on the languages involved, so the most I could do was to add a hidden note encouraging discussion. Hopefully this can be settled without any more reverts. I think your solition to just give the word as Hindi and leave it at that is best, and I hope it will be accepted. Thanks again. - BillCJ (talk) 03:09, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Brahmos
This refers to your redirect of "Brahmos" to BrahMos. May I respectfully suggest that you may consider if you have a neutral POV on military matters versus religious matters. May I also respectfully suggest that BrahMos is a recently coined (artificial) acronym whereas the Brahmos (religionists) have existed since at least 1828 with that appellation which by no stretch can be considered to be "colloquial". Dear Mr.Sniper. Your innocuous remark on Talk:Brahmo has triggered a merge tag. Kindly examine. BTW Many thanks for your assistance on the page. Yvantanguy (talk) 07:20, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
- Dear Sniperz11. If merger is done there will be war. It is like Shia - Sunni. We dont agree on who founded the Brahmo Samaj. We dont agree on when the Brahmo Samaj was founded. We both have official sources with all kinds of "scholarly" books (you know how Indian History is written and re-written). In this case it will be Harvard-Andover school of Theolgy versus Chicago school of Theology (all the records are over there). The reason that the Brahmo Samaj article is so sketchy is because we were very happy to keep the long holding truce, but recent developments are causing destabilisation. Many thanks for your comments (all of them). I understand you clearly, Paul B takes some comprehension Yvantanguy (talk) 19:24, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
Hi Sniperz11. I'm back to bother you. The Brahmo faction problems are bubbling away in a civilised fashion at Brahmo Samaj - we are slowly inching towards the controversial parts, but Hindu Patriot missiles displaying Circular Error Probability in their internal guidance systems are buzzing around. Can you check out my latest post at Talk:Brahmo_Samaj, because I dont know how to deal with this kind of situation (which evidently is quite rampant in Wikipedia) as per WP policy? Thanks and Cheers. [edit] Agni missile globalization
This article needs to be globalized, because it makes the false claim that maneuvering RVs are an Indian invention. Seems to be the work of an Indian nationalist, or at best one naive about the world history of reentry vehicles.
"The article claims that the maneuvering RV of Agni is not merely "advanced," but superior to Western or possibly Soviet RVs. Yet, Indian development of MRV apparently took place in the 80's or possibly early 90's, as per the article itself. The US developed MRVs in the early- to mid-60's, starting with ASSET testing the basic vehicle layout and construction. (See: Heppenheimer, NASA SP-4221, Chapter 1.) Next, The G. L. Martin Co.'s PRIME actually demonstrated extreme crossranges, in a trajectory identical to an actual ICBM launch. Pershing II actually deployed a "smart" warhead, with movable fins actuated autonomously by an onboard seeker head... in 1983. This is all in addition to civilian programs for maneuvering re-entry bodies (i.e. the Apollo capsule, Space Shuttle, CRV), and any Soviet work.
"The West then abandoned MRVs. Highly-accurate rocket motors, combined with worldwide intelligence in the form of high-accuracy geodesy and frequently-updated atmospheric models, negated the need for terminal correction. Meanwhile, ballistic missile defenses were countered by the deployment of large, reliable ICBM forces. Combined with a reasonable number and sophistication in decoys, maneuvering RVs became costly, weighty, and unnecessary. For the highest precision, the West turned to cruise missiles, with CEPs of a few yards.
"And yet, this article claims MRVs are an Indian invention, not an Indian attempt to catch up to the West. It is this article that is the invention."
Would you care to revise the article, within five days, or would you rather see what I will write? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.8.238.186 (talk) 00:03, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi! Will you be able to finish your BCAD range over the next few days, do you think? You don't have many left to do and we are looking to close the drive soon. All the best, --ROGER DAVIES talk 04:21, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry to nag but would you mind if ask another editor to finish off your second A-list range? This is not reflection at all on your work, which has - as always - been excellent. I entirely understand that things don't always go according to plan and that real life intervenes:) If I don't hear within 24 hours, I'll assume it's okay. Thanks very much for your help so far, --ROGER DAVIES talk 18:54, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

- No problem at all, mate! Thanks very much for letting me know and finding the time :) --ROGER DAVIES talk 05:36, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Sniperz, you might be interested in this diff and this one. I've also opened a comment at WT:AIR. Thanks. (PS. Chanka must be on holiday, or this guy would really get to see an Indian's response!) - BillCJ (talk) 07:45, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Telangana page problems
Sniperz, another user asked for my help on the Telangana article, citing vandalism. From what i can see, it's more of an edit conflict, with the supposed vandal adding biased/POV material, and not straight vandalism, tho they may be trying to be disruptive. Would you mind chacking it oput, and seeing if there's anything you can do to help. or someone else you can refer to help him with the page? Thanks. - BillCJ (talk) 01:32, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] User box problem
I think the problem is one of the userboxes in your Groups userset. It may not be working properly.
I hope you don't mind but I've commented it out. After doing this, the userbox sets below it ("Stupid stuff which doesn't matter" etc) and the rest of page display perfectly. I suggest you un-comment "Groups" and then comment out each of the userboxes in it one by one to see which one is breaking it. You will be able to tell because the other group sets will appear/disappear. I hope this helps :)
All the best, --ROGER DAVIES talk 13:23, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
- Well, I followed my own advice and tried commenting out user boxes in the Groups userset one by one. The problem is with {{User wikihi}}: once this is commented out the problem goes away. If you want to follow this up, you can ask on the template's talk page. --ROGER DAVIES talk 13:34, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Today (Apr 20th), around 15:00 UTC! Possibly on Skype, but certainly on IRC (#wikipedia-en-lectures on freenode)! I don't actually know about the Skype details... Message me on Skype (xavexgoem) about that, if you have it (no harm in getting it, either), and then maybe by that time I'll have a clue :-p Xavexgoem (talk) 14:28, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Template:Indian missiles
Following our previous discussion, do you think something like Sagarika • K15 would be more appropriate than the current SLBM • Sagarika? I'm not sure what's the meaning of K15 in the first place, but can only guess that it is the name of the Sagarika missile currently being tested (i.e. the 700km ranged one). Do you think it's fine? Thanks. S3000 ☎ 10:06, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
Oh sorry, I just realised that 'wikibreak' tag. No hurry. Take your time to get back to me. Good luck with your work :-) S3000 ☎ 10:10, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] User:Harsh1125
Sniperz, if you're around, could you drop User talk:Harsh1125 a line, and mention about 3RR? He's dangerlously close if not over the limit on several articles due to his persistant reverting over comparable aircraft. I'd mention it myself, but as I am the arrogant Westerner (or Indian, depending on which side of the revert I'm on!) who keeps reverting him, he might take this better from you as someone not involved in the disputes. Thanks. - BillCJ (talk) 19:43, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
- I second that, please take a look at the MiG-35 page. He keeps adding non sense on the page. Regards ChowHui (talk) 07:03, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

And one more thing I am not feeeling bad at all, after all you all are seniors .Its your duty to correct others (NOVICE editors). Here on I will follow your advise while editing. And that bill BillCJ (talk) that he is not an arrogant Westerner.Harsh1125 (talk) 07:57, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, we're posting on time for once (40 minutes early). Todays lecture is by Vassyana (an expert mediator), who will be talking about how to deal with conflicts, whether you are a mediator or not. Hope to see you there! --Kim Bruning (talk) 14:15, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

Issue XXVII (May 2008)

- Project news
- Editors needed for Tag & Assess 2008. To coincide with the summer holidays, it will be gearing up from 15 June. As usual, barnstars galore!
- Partner peer reviews: for a thirty-day trial period, we'll be running joint peer reviews with Wikiproject Video Games. The idea is simple: we help with their reviews; they help with ours. This way both wikiprojects benefit from new reviewers and new ideas!
- We're notable: A new book, Simon Fowler's 2007 Guide to Military History on the Internet (UK:Pen & Sword, ISBN 9781844156061) rates Wikipedia as "the best general resource" for military research (p. 7). Of the military pages, he says: "The results are largely accurate and generally free of bias" (he also suggests people join the wikiproject). When rating WP as the No. 1 military site (p. 201) he says "Wikipedia is often criticised for its inaccuracy and bias, but in my experience the military history articles are spot on."
- A-Class reviews: the usual four-day review period may now be extended by up to three days (ie seven days in total) in the following circumstances:
- the article has no opposes but has insufficient support for promotion or
- the article's nominator requests more time to resolve matters arising during the review.
- The full text is here.
