[edit] NPOV Discussion

This might better have been just put in the general cleanup list, but I think much of the prose, particularly after the Supreme Court ruling portion, is sensationalistic and as such does not conform to the NPOV policy. Partly it's that poor formatting makes it unclear what's a quote and what isn't. But as examples:

"Despite his credentials as one of the nation’s top economists, however, Charles Schultze was no more prepared to accurately predict future benefits than anyone else at the time."

"Wheeler and McDonald’s analysis is very insightful, and it does identify potential flaws with TVA’s method. At the same time all econometric models must make some assumptions, and nobody can predict the future. Of course this is why people like Red Wagner never liked such numbers to begin with. Congress and the president required them however, and it certainly made sense to at least try to quantify the benefits of any project of this scale. People could make estimates of benefits, but benefits would always be difficult, or impossible, to quantify. Once they were quantified they became legitimate targets for the opposition."

"He now found himself in the very unfortunate position of having to write a law that would flood the Little Tennessee River valley and drown a river that he, as much as any of the dam opponents, loved."

"Senator Baker’s statement was humorous. It was melodramatic. It was, no doubt, heartfelt."

"It meant the death of a river—a river that even those who supported the dam agreed was beautiful and unique."

Seriously in need of overhaul, this is. The Literate Engineer 17:28, 20 July 2005 (UTC)

Bloody heck, this article is about a fish. A lengthy rant about US politics doesn't belong here. Move it to Snail darter controversy or something. JIP | Talk 11:18, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

I created a new article, as you suggested. The POV mark is in the new article now, as I think what remains is not POV. --Gakrivas 13:36, 11 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Importance of additional information

The snail darter is a fish, but it's also a word that has come to mean "environmental extremist." The additional information is now listed under snail darter controversy but is critical to this entry. The NYTimes and others frequently still refer to the snail darter decades after the infamous controversy. --Utahredrock 06:08, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
