SMON

In computer networking, SMON is a set of MIB extensions for RMON that allow the monitoring of switching equipment from a single management workstation in far greater detail than offered by RMON. SMON is described by RFC 2613.
It is also Oracle System MONitor. SMON is an Oracle background process created when you start a database instance. The SMON process performs instance recovery, cleans up after dirty shutdowns and coalesces adjacent free extents into larger free extents.[1]
