[edit] History

In 1893, Charles Anthoni Johnson Brooke, the second White Rajah of Sarawak founded a boys' school called the "Government Lay School". The first registration recorded 100 students from Standards 1 to 5. Thirty six years later, the name of the school was changed to "James Brooke Malay School". That school was moved to a new site at Jawa Road (now P. Ramlee Road) in 1940 and given the name "Madrasah Melayu"(which is now the Islamic Museum).

Due to the increasing number of students, Green Road Government Secondary School (the term "government" was commonly left out in the name, hence the acronynm GRSS) was built at Green Road. GRSS started in 1963 with its students consisting mainly of those from "Madrasah Melayu". GRSS was officially opened on 10 June 1965 by Mr Abdul Aziz (the then Chief Secretary of The Ministry of Education) with 335 students and 25 teachers. As of 2006, the school has 2054 students and 156 teachers. The school motto is May We Grow As One.

The name of the school is derived from the road where it is situated - Green Road. During the Japanese occupation, the Japanese planted rubber along Green Road. As a result, the road was given the name "Green" because of the lush greenery and the school is believed to have been an orchard. With the passage of English as the medium of instruction (late 70s), GRSS became known as Sekolah Menengah Kerajaan (SMK) Green Road. Later still, it became Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Green Road.
