Smithsburg High School

Smithsburg High School was constructed in 1965 in the town of Smithsburg, Maryland. It is one of the eight public high schools in Washington County.

[edit] Sports

Smithsburg is noted for their many state championships won by sports teams, in particular girls sports. The girls soccer team is currently two-time defending 1A state champions, with the girls cross country team also currently holding the state title. In other sports, the boys outdoor track team is also currently defending two state championships.

Beginning on August 15th of every year, the fall sports season begins. Sports offered from August to November include JV and Varsity Soccer (Paul Newman, Gary Rupert, and Stan Wade (boys); William Fowkes, Jr. (girls)), Freshman, JV, and Varsity Football (Walter "Buddy" Orndorff), Cheerleading, Golf (Thomas Neff), Volleyball, and Cross Country (Raymond Shriver).

During the 2006-2007 school year season, the Girls Cross Country team placed first in the 1A State Cross Country Competition at Hereford High School. The girls soccer team also placed 1st at the Maryland State 1A finals.

Beginning on November 16th of every year, the winter sports season begins. Tryouts are offered for basketball typically first. Sports offered in the winter include Indoor Track and Field (Raymond Shriver), Freshman, JV and Varsity Basketball (Eric Gerber, Mens;), Indoor Color Guard, Cheerleading, and Wrestling(Joseph Dietrich).

Beginning on March 1st of every year, the spring sports season begins. Activities offered include Outdoor Track and Field, Girls and Boys JV and Varsity Lacrosse (Joseph and Cheryl Dietrich), JV and Varsity Baseball (William Fowkes, Jr.), Girls Softball (Brian Getz) and Tennis.

In the 2006-2007 school year season, the boys Outdoor Track and Field team won the 1A state championship.

          On Saturday, March 8 2008, the Smithsburg High School Academic Team won first place in the 12th annual Washington County Academic Team tournament.  The team,
          consisting of David Kurz, Addison Slick, Aaron Zaccharia, and Alexandra Slick, earned 270 points in the final round, nearly tripling the 100-point score of the
          second place competitor, Clear Spring High School.  They won a total of $725 in scholarship money, to be split equally among the three seniors on the winning team.

The Smithsburg High Drama students are very dedicated. They perform at least two shows a year, a Spring and Fall show. Shows that Smithsburg High Drama Students have performed include, Footlose, Little Shop of Horrors, High School Musical, Oklahoma, Grease, and many others.
