Smithfield railway station is a railway station on the Gawler railway line which is located in the northern Adelaide suburb of Smithfield. It is located 30.2 km by railway from the Adelaide Railway Station. It is part of the Smithfield Interchange which allows a connection with the 228, 440, 441, 442, 443 and 451 bus services which allow a transfer to services connecting other northern suburbs such as Andrews Farm and Munno Para.
[edit] History
The station was the original terminus of the main north line when it opened in 1857, before the line was extended to Gawler in 1860. A station building and ticket office to the same design as that at North Adelaide station were provided. The line to Gawler was opened later in 1857 opening in September. A short branch line from the station was built running almost due west to the Smithfield munitions storage depot during the Second World War. This line was closed around 1961 when part of the depot was closed and the land sold for subdivision.
The original station building and ticket office was demolished during the mid to late 1980s. By that time, the station building had been heavily vandalised. Station shelters like the ones at Dry Creek were installed and these remained until c.2001 when the current station shelter was erected. At the same time, the down (Gawler side) platform was upgraded.
