Smithfield Township is a township in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,466 at the 2000 census. The township includes the village of Smithfield.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 5.8 square miles (14.9 km²), of which, 5.6 square miles (14.6 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (2.25%) is water.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 4,466 people, 601 households, and 366 families residing in the township. The population density was 791.7 people per square mile (305.7/km²). There were 637 housing units at an average density of 112.9/sq mi (43.6/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 53.02% White, 41.76% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 2.75% from other races, and 2.06% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.72% of the population.
There were 601 households out of which 24.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.9% were married couples living together, 9.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.1% were non-families. 34.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.84.
In the township the population was spread out with 6.6% under the age of 18, 15.4% from 18 to 24, 52.5% from 25 to 44, 19.0% from 45 to 64, and 6.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 529.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 619.5 males.
The median income for a household in the township was $30,855, and the median income for a family was $38,571. Males had a median income of $15,987 versus $20,966 for females. The per capita income for the township was $8,109. About 4.4% of families and 7.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 5.1% of those age 65 or over.
