Smithfield is a town in Wetzel County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 177 at the 2000 census.

Smithfield is located at 39°29′49″N, 80°33′40″W (39.496806, -80.561242)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²), all land.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 177 people, 77 households, and 49 families residing in the town. The population density was 273.4/km² (703.4/mi²). There were 98 housing units at an average density of 151.4/km² (389.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 100.00% White. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.13% of the population.

There were 77 households out of which 23.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.0% were married couples living together, 15.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.1% were non-families. 29.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.82.

In the town the population was spread out with 19.8% under the age of 18, 11.9% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 24.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 108.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $18,500, and the median income for a family was $22,188. Males had a median income of $13,125 versus $15,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $58,279. About 35.8% of families and 39.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 43.9% of those under the age of eighteen and 13.2% of those sixty five or over.
