Smith Breeden

Smith Breeden Associates is a United States asset management company focused on the fixed income markets. Initially, Smith Breeden's research and portfolio management activities focused on the U.S. mortgage market and agency mortgage-backed securities in particular.

The firm has since applied its quantitative research and trading skills to other sectors of the fixed-income market such as corporate bonds, commercial MBS, and asset-backed securities. As of September 30, 2006, Smith Breeden's assets under management totaled $29 billion.

  • 1982 - Gregory L. Smith and Douglas T. Breeden, Ph.D., found Smith Breeden as interest rate risk advisory firm for financial institutions.
  • 1983 - Smith Breeden develops proprietary option-adjusted pricing techniques.
  • 1984 - Advisory assets exceed one billion dollars.
  • 1990 - Smith Breeden expands product offerings to include discretionary money-management and lands first discretionary tax-exempt separate account.
  • 1992 - Discretionary assets exceed one billion dollars. Launches innovative enhanced S&P 500 Index strategy and absolute return strategy.
  • 1994 - For the third year in a row, Smith Breeden is named one of Pensions and Investments magazine's fastest growing money managers.
  • 2000 - Eugene Flood, Ph.D., becomes President and C.E.O. after serving as an Outside Director of the Board for the previous six years.
  • 2004 - Firm launches high alpha strategies designed for institutional clients with more aggressive risk and return objectives.
  • 2005 - Discretionary assets exceed twenty billion dollars.
  • 2006 - As of September 30, 2006, Smith Breeden's assets under management totaled $29 billion.
  • 2007 - As of January 31, 2007, Smith Breeden's assets under management totaled $31.5 billion.
