Smith-Marriott Baronets

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Smith, later Smith-Marriott Baronetcy, of Sydling St Nicholas in the County of Dorset, is a title in the Baronetage of Great Britain. It was created on 1 June 1774 for John Smith, High Sheriff of Dorset in 1772. The second Baronet married Elizabeth Anne, daughter of Reverend James Merriott. The fourth Baronet assumed by Royal sign-manual the additional surname of Marriott. The fifth Baronet was High Sheriff of Dorset in 1873.

Three other members of the family may also be mentioned. Hugh Francis Wyldbore Wyldbore-Smith (1869-1919), grandson of Reverend Francis Smith, sixth son of the second Baronet, was a Captain in the Royal Navy. Sir (Francis) Brian Wyldbore Wyldbore-Smith (1913-2005), great-grandson of Reverend Francis Smith, sixth son of the second Baronet, was a Major-General in the Royal Horse Artillery and the 15th/19th The King's Royal Hussars. Sir Clifford Edward Heathcote-Smith (1883-1963), grandson of Major Edward Heathcote Smith, seventh son of the second Baronet, was a diplomat.
