Is it smântană in Romanian?

[edit] What's the difference

Is there really a difference between smetana and sour cream? when i tasted both there was no real difference. Does anyone knows for sure?

Sour cream sucks. Seriously, if you tasted them both in, say, United States, no wonder. It is the same problem as with vodka: to me it is just water + alcohol no matter which one; while connoisseurs distinguish brands with eyes closed. There are plenty of brands of sour cream and plenty of brands of 'smetana', all differ. E.g., to my tastes, of all american sour creams I can tolerate only Knudsen brand. Actually i tasted sour cream in USA, and smetana in Russia, i always have thought that sour cream was just a 1-1 translation of the russian word (сметана) smetana into english. And while i can not agree more about Vodka(i am one of connoisseurs you describe), i don't think this applies to smetana vs sour cream. I have tasted good and awful smetana, and good and awful sour cream. I am still not convinced that there is a difference.

Aftr some thinking, you are probably right. They are both brands of the essentially same product. Just like beer or whatever. The whole continous spectrum. So unless some compelling arguments will be presented, I will support a vote to
  1. write a separate sour cream article (now it is a redirect to [Cream]])
  2. and to merge it with smetana. Mikkalai 08:39, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)
We've got BOTH in Finland, and they're definitely different. Smetana is much thicker and sweeter than sour cream, and the latter just tastes stupid. - Cymydog Naakka 09:24, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Even so we need some kind of definitive knowledge wether smetana and sour cream are the same product, or just a variation of same product. Guiness and Budwaiser taste VERY differently, yet they are both beers, since they were produced by esseantially same process.--Hq3473 09:31, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Heheh. Could be. With that in mind you might say a merge could be appropriate. - Cymydog Naakka 09:53, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)
I am implemnting Mikkalai suggestions, if anyone has a different opinion please post on Sour cream discussion page.--Hq3473 21:51, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] And what about the composer?

As the previous version of this page stated, Smetana is also the name of a composer, Bedřich Smetana. I can't tell whether sour cream and smetana taste different :), but if sour cream is the primary page for that, this page, Smetana, should be a disambiguation page, or a redirect to Smetana (disambiguation), which already exists. We could also make this one the primary page for the sour cream and link it to the disambiguation page. What do you think? -- Adiel 03:58, 2005 Feb 12 (UTC)

I think the composer should be the main article for Smetana and there should be a link to this disambig page on the top of the composer's page. --GidKlio Gidklio 05:02, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

I disagree with that. The primary usage is the sour cream. In fact, the composer's last name is derived from the sour cream... bogdan 09:39, 1 September 2006 (UTC)
