SMCF(Formerly Sale Baptist Church) is a Evangelical church affiliated with Salt and Light Churches. The church is located in Sale, Manchester. The church has been led by Senior Leader Andy Barclay-Watt since 2003, previously Martin Dunkley. It is a growing church of nealy 450 people - of all ages, but with 60% under 30, and 20+ nationalities.[1]
[edit] History
The church began as Sale Baptist Church in 1877, and whilst still belonging to the Baptist denomination, they are now also part of the Salt and Light international church network.,[2]
[edit] Ministries
South Manchester Christian Fellowship runs many different ministries in addition to Sunday services and events. SMCF, like other churches, runs a small group structure named "discipleship groups". Groups of approximately 6-12 people meet on a weekly or fortnightly basis across Manchester. The main ministries of SMCF include:
Crossroads Counselling Service
Crossroads Counselling Service are a group of qualified, volunteer, Christian counsellors closely linked to South Manchester Christian Fellowship. They offer free confidential counselling services for both non-Christians and Christians.[3]
City Centre Ministries
City Centre Ministries is a group of volunteers who work to serve the homeless and disadvantaged people in the centre of Manchester. City Centre Ministries was founded and is led by church member Steve Brown. They serve those in need with free food, drink and a listening ear. The team can be found every Wednesday and Saturday night in the centre of Manchester.[4]
The Genesis Project
The Genesis Project consists of a team of volunteers who are committed to serving the people of Sale Moor by providing activities and events for young people in the Sale Moor area, particularly in the Beech Farm estate. Their work includes ‘Kidz Klub’ every Thursday and school support and mentoring. They want to provide a place where young people can come and express themselves through creative arts, and want it to be a place where they feel supported and listened to.[5]
Alpha Courses
SMCF regularly run alpha courses, which are designed especially for those who have questions about the Christian faith, and consists of 10 weekly sessions and a Saturday or weekend away. Alpha takes place in a variety of venues, including homes, and typically consists of watching a short talk on DVD, followed by discussion over coffee and cakes, or sometimes a meal, during which you are encouraged to ask any questions.[6]
