Smbat III (died 1042) also known as Ohannes Smbat, was king of Armenia from 1020 to 1024[1]. "“He was peace-loving, and an incompetent person as far as concerning handling weapons and warfare, which was strongly related to his heavily overweight person"[citation needed]

During the reign of Smbat III, an Armenian-Georgian great feudal lord, David, who owned Taik(Tao) (Ispir and Olti) had, during his battles against the Muslims, gained a large area which stretched all the way to Manazkert. David was a subject of the Byzantine Empire and when he died his entire territory was occupied by Basil II.
