[edit] Credit where credit is due
The SMAUG source code is full of credit references to contributors, and is in compliance with both the DikuMUD and Merc MUD license agreements. It's online building system and area file enhancements were developed completely independently from NiMUD (aka TheIsles) ILAB OLC. Of note, NiMUD code does not adhere to the Diku/Merc license agreements. Before laying any unfounded claims, proponents of NiMUD should first clean up their own dirty laundry, and get their distribution in line with the required license agreements.
I welcome independent parties to compare the differences between the original Merc 2.1 distribution and the SMAUG distribution versus the same differences between the Merc 2.1 distribution and TheIsles1.5 (all are available from ftpgame.org), and to point out specific SMAUG code that appears to have be based upon TheIsles code. Do note that some TheIsles code includes unattributed code from other code bases (the tracking code from CircleMUD for instance).
While the ILAB/OLC code is quite popular and has been ported to several different code bases (including SMAUG and SMAUG derivatives for people who prefer ILAB/OLC to SMAUG's online building), SMAUG's online building is clearly a separate work. --Thoric 28 June 2005 16:33 (UTC)
[edit] Plain vanilla POV
I removed the following statement from the article:
...and was the first release of a DikuMUD derivative to raise the bar, and include a feature set far beyond the plain vanilla standard.
It's not that I disagree, but the article would be better served by explaining how this was done rather than stating it summarily in this fashion. --GentlemanGhost 20:51, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
