Smartripper is a freeware software application that can be used to create a copy of a DVD on a hard drive. The program supports three copy modes: Movie (copy the movie only), Files (copy selected files only) and Backup (copy whole disk).
Smartripper is able to bypass a few DVD copy protections. SmartRipper development has been ceased, but the source code of last version (2.41) was released by the developers.
Use of programs such as Smartripper may be considered illegal in some countries, like the United States.[citation needed].
