The Smart fortwo EV will be a Fortwo modified for operation by Zytek Electric Vehicles as a battery electric vehicle. Production may be as early as 2008.
The Fortwo is a two-passenger urban vehicle, short in length, powered by a rear-mounted engine driving the rear wheels. It runs on 13.2 kWh of sodium-nickel chloride Zebra batteries.
The first Smart EV was delivered to Coventry City Council on 16th January 2008. This was the first of 100 vehicles being piloted in the UK.
