[edit] When an article is finished...

Regarding my post on the proposals page, or more specifically, your reply to it (thanks), involving the Reviewed article version and Article validation feature links you gave: I want to ask whether if I just leave it, this feature will come about by itself in the course of time? I'd rather spend time on science articles than getting bogged down in Wikipedia itself and would like to rest (or work), assured that this "problem" will be taken care of without my input. Is that likely? --Seans Potato Business 02:52, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

I'd say that's reasonably correct. According to Brion, Wikimedia's CTO, a MediaWiki development team has been assigned exclusively to implementing stable revisions. If you want to provide input, it's welcome, of course; the best place to watch for developments would probably be some of the mailing lists, particularly wikipedia-l and wikitech-l. --Slowking Man 09:13, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] No Doubt Vandal

Thanks for blocking this vandal. If the vandal weren't blocked ASAP, the vandal would have engaged in a wheel war for the entire night. Real96 09:03, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

No problem (although I think you meant edit war, not wheel war ). Yell at me if there's any more trouble. --Slowking Man 09:13, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Strasbourg

Does that mean i could go mess around in any article i want, reverting randomly to prevous versions, like R9tgokunks (talk · contribs) does ? Or is he the only one allowed to ?RCS 08:04, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

No, as randomly reverting articles would be vandalism. There are also measures such as the three-revert rule, and in the case of edit wars, pages can be protected. However, from his edit summary, he obviously had issues with some of the article's content, and he performed a single reversion. The edit was made in good faith, so it is certainly not vandalism; "any good-faith effort to improve the encyclopedia, even if misguided or ill-considered, is not vandalism." If you disagree with his edit, discuss it with him and other editors. --Slowking Man 08:09, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
But i already have! And others too ! FOR NO AVAIL !!!!! RCS 08:10, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
If you believe you have an intractable problem with a user, then you may wish to consider the dispute resolution process. It's often a good idea to try to see things from the other person's point of view; perhaps the dispute isn't as serious as you think it is. You might wish to seek broader community input on the matter through a forum such as the village pump. --Slowking Man 08:16, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Linens 'n' Things

Hi,

It looks like this is probably a subject that could be notable. Bear in mind that I was deleting the verison that had been tagged, not the subject. If you remove what was basically advertising, all there was: "Linens 'n Things is a chain of bath, bed, and other accessory stores in the United States and Canada. Its corporate headquarters is located in Clifton, New Jersey." As far as I could tell, that's not really worth keeping as an article, so I deleted. But if a decent stub were written on it, I don't see why it would be deleted. --Robdurbar 11:53, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] List of experiments from Lilo & Stitch PROD

I removed the proposed deletion you endorsed for the reasons listed here. I know that certain parts of the article are a disaster. Disney didn't help matters with the last movie as it just screams filling in OR. Lots of what I believe are kids are "helping" the article, too. I've been trying to keep some semblance of a proper article there, but it's been a long battle and to be honest, I'm getting rather tired of fighting the battle. I was tempted to leave the prod there, but on the other hand it was a lot of work and it had been through an AfD before. -- Gogo Dodo 05:35, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] 512theking

Thanks for blocking my brother (512theking) whose a sockpuppet and uses multiple accounts. What are you going to do? he's planing on doing this again maybe 512theking6. Maybe you should block all the IPs and block us both just to releive you guys from him. -- JohnnyAlbert 20:48, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

I've filed a CheckUser request. If he is your brother, perhaps you should consider talking to your parents. You're certainly not going to be blocked, since you haven't done anything wrong. --Slowking Man 02:06, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
I wish it were that way, as soon as i tell my parents, he'll start a big argument and he'll end up wining it becuase he's older, more mature, and has more control than me. Yet, i still don't understand why he wants me out of wikipedia. -- JohnnyAlbert 02:09, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
If this is a problem, you might wish to have your parents contact OTRS in order to speak to an official representative of the Wikimedia Foundation. --Slowking Man 02:12, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
Explain please just to understand because my parents need an explanation for everything. -- JohnnyAlbert 02:12, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
If your parents e-mail info-en<at>wikimedia.org (replace "<at>" with "@") and explain the situation, a Foundation volunteer will be able to assist them. They may wish to mention my username, in case the responder needs to consult me. --Slowking Man 02:19, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
I'll try this thank you, if my parents want. Can you do me one last favor, can you check Pennsylvania Route 65 and see the references and tell me which are personal and not reliable because this editor said the same thing and failed it to become a Good article. -- JohnnyAlbert 02:20, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

And i'm not leaving. -- JohnnyAlbert 02:24, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

That's good to hear. Regarding Pennsylvania Route 65, I believe the GA reviewer meant that the given sources are mostly from unoffical websites that aggregrate content. Reliable sources, in the context of this article, would be things such as publications by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, American Automobile Association, things like that. Teritary sources should be avoided in articles. Wikipedia:Attribution explains this fairly well, I think (although don't hesistate to ask me any questions). --Slowking Man 02:39, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
Okay, i get it he meant better websites, i get it i wish i could find something reliable i hope i do. That's all i'll work on it tomorrow i'm going to watch TV good night and thank you so much for all the help, trust me i will stop my brother. -- User:JohnnyAlbert10 02:42, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
My brother (512theking) as you noticed isn't a "good boy". Well he got caught shoplifting again and was sent to juvy again and the judge said he'll staying there for 3 months because of drug dealing as well. So this is a break for you and me. -- User:JohnnyAlbert10 22:22, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Response for Semiprotect offer

I appreciate the offer, but I think I'll pass on it. It's a result of the whole RC Patrol thing, and much of the vandalism comes from registered users (vandal accounts, sure, but still registered), so the semiprotect wouldn't help much anyway. Thanks for the lookout, though! -- GJD 22:01, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion of Newly Created Entry

I am new at creating entries into Wikipedia, however, I believe my entry for Mr. Coyne is valid. There are many other current entries in Wikipedia regarding other "similar" individuals/academics/authors who have been valid entries for some time. Only a few examples of this very long list are Mr. Tom Peters, Mr. Gary Hamel, Mr. Thomas H. Davenport, Mr. Clayton M. Christensen--to name only a few. I have done quite a bit of research before adding Mr. Coyne's entry. Can you identify specifically why my article on Mr. Coyne is different from any of those I have compared to? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Emanside (talkcontribs) 01:48, 20 March 2007 (UTC).--Emanside 01:49, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

The article, as it was, read like a promotional directory entry or résumé. Information on Wikipedia should be attributed to reliable sources and written from a neutral point of view. I don't think there's a problem with having an article on him—he seems notable enough—but articles need to conform to the project's standards. For more advice, see Wikipedia:Your first article, and feel welcome to ask any other questions you may have. --Slowking Man 02:00, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for your response. I had reveiwed that section on "Wikipedia: Your first article" and closely followed the format of other similar entries as I noted before. But, I will review the section again, as well as the other current similar entries and see if I can revise it to better conform. Thanks for the guidance. --Emanside 22:16, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks a lot, bro

Articles in Wikipedia must be written with information from multiple reliable sources. If such sources do not exist, then subjects do not meet our standards for notability. Wikipedia is not concerned with what is true, but with what is verifiable. --Slowking Man 01:10, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hans Reiser article protect

I was thinking about this, but I think that it may be a mistake. We just have the one vandal, not legions of them; he's done something else a few days ago, but stopped. They don't appear all that violently persistent. And while I think the edits today are a serious problem on several levels, it's not that it's vandalism per se, it's inappropriate content for the article.

I'm not going to unprotect it, or shift it to sprotected (which I was also thinking about), but it might be good to think about it a bit before leaving it with protection on...

Thanks. Georgewilliamherbert 02:44, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

I did semi-protect it (not full-protect). I think 2 days' semi-protection is fine; I'll consider a range block if he keeps it up. If you disagree, feel free to reverse it; I'm not a fan of wheel warring. --Slowking Man 02:48, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
I'm not going to reverse it. It's not that big a deal 8-) Georgewilliamherbert 02:53, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Amplifier

I saw that you reverted the edits, but the text is still there. BlackBear 14:05, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Hey,I'm working on the Magic Lantern Article. I need for the theater to re-open to finish the article. Thanks for keeping an eye on articles. Moviemaker92 11:50 EST 3/23/07

Okay, I've removed the prod tag. I've also moved it to Magic Lantern (theater) (per the naming conventions) and cleaned it up a bit. I apologize for tagging it; I was probably a bit premature, but we get a lot of short stubs about insignificant subjects dumped into the project and never touched again. It seems somewhat notable, though, and you're expanding it. --Slowking Man 07:19, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Soft blocking TOR proxies

Please don't unblock hard blocks on TOR proxies, and re-block them as soft blocks. I've had to re-block one TOR proxy that you had unblocked and soft-blocked, because it was doing some very nasty stuff. TOR proxies need to be hard blocked. I often find new accounts doing something fairly awful, and discover that their IPs are TOR proxies. It happens all the time. It turns out that it is trivially easy for an editor to get a new account name by finding some unblocked TOR proxy; once they do so, the full range of TOR proxies become useable by them. I wish there weren't vandals, but there are, and they're often extremely nasty. TOR proxies don't get special treatment; like all proxies, they are hard blocked. [edit] Robert L. Adams

I am trying to write an article in the strickest biographical sense...would it help if I don't mention any company names...I see many biographies and product descriptions about breakthrough technologies all over wikipedia...I thought it would be beneficial sense companies such as this and pioneers in FM radio save lives during natural disasters...any input would be appreciated. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Jadam23 (talkcontribs) 08:04, April 7, 2007.

I appreciate your intentions. However, subjects of Wikipedia articles must be notable, and have multiple verifiable sources available for information to be drawn from. Unfortunately, the article you created appears to be based on original research, which is not permitted on Wikipedia. Also, you appear to be involved with the company, which means you have a conflict of interest. My advice would be to refrain from creating articles about subjects you may have a bias towards; if the subject is notable, another editor will write about it. Your help in improving our existing material would be welcome. --Slowking Man 08:12, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

I thought the description of this technology was neutral...maybe if Henry Ford invented it I could write about it...I pass kingsford charcoal daily at the local grocery store.

http://www.pr-inside.com/mississippi-office-of-homeland-security-launches-r64353.htm

This link and the following comment below should show the fairness in displaying the content I wish to author.

"Ford was instrumental in developing charcoal briquets, under the brand name "Kingsford". Along with his brother in law, E.G. Kingsford used wood scraps from the Ford factory to make the briquets, adding backyard grilling as a pastime." from Henry Ford article. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Jadam23 (talkcontribs) 08:19, April 7, 2007.

I'm sorry, but the article you linked to is a press release by the company that created the technology, which would be an unacceptable source; the attribution FAQ and page about spam explain this in more detail. The basic point is that there need to be multiple independent sources from which to draw information for an article. The example you gave, charcoal, is clearly notable, as there are numerous independent works about charcoal: newspaper articles, books, television programs, and so on. --Slowking Man 08:37, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

Moving something into userspace doesn't exempt it from the speedy deletion criteria. Placing commentary into articles breaches Wikipedia's policies, which dicate that all articles be written from a neutral point of view. You also kept including a link to a website you're apparently affiliated with, which constitutes advertisement. My reverts of your edits have nothing to do with my view of the opinions expressed. If you feel the article should be revised in some way, my suggestion would be to discuss the matter on the article's talk page. --Slowking Man 09:29, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Block on .info in #wikipedia

Why have you blocked the entire .info domain in #wikipedia? 1) It kills my personal logbot, which I need. 2) It might potentially affect hundreds of other users.--Eloquence* 03:15, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

I've lifted it. Basically, I ran through my logs and saw nothing but abuse coming from .info, so I autoremoved it. If necessary, I can always re-remove it and give your bot a ban exemption (or you can get it cloaked). --Slowking Man 17:30, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Protecting against vandalism

Hi, I was wondering how one goes about having a page protected from rampant anonymous vandalism. A page I help edit, Strabane, has suffered a lot of late from anonymous vandals. I thought to ask as you'd protected a page I viewed recently (Kurt Vonnegut's page RIP) Alastairward 07:33, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

There's a page specifically for such requests, although you can ask any admin personally as well. As for Strabane, it looks like there's been a bit of vandalism recently, but not anything that looks like it requires protection, which is generally only used for very high levels of vandalism (every few minutes or so). I've put the article on my watchlist. --Slowking Man 17:30, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sockpuppets you blocked: How should I have reported it?

Quick question. You just blocked User:Rindle and User:Psychostylee for sockpuppetry. Cool. I noticed it a few minutes before you blocked them, and was futzing around trying to figure out where to report it. Is WP:SSP really the right place? Seems pretty bureaucratic for such an obvious case. WP:AIV? Something else? Did someone report it, or did you just notice it by constantly removing the page? Thanks. --barneca (talk) 18:18, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

For this case of patently obvious vandalism, AIV should be fine (or ask an admin individually). I noticed it by looking at the deleted histories of Marquezo and Atronefo, which were created by one account and then recreated by the other. I've got their IP range too, so I can block it if needed. Alert me if there's any more vandalism. --Slowking Man 18:25, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Hello. Unfortunately, KNEIP Communication, as it was written, resembled an advertisement or corporate directory entry, which does not comply with Wikipedia's policies regarding neutral point of view and advertisement. Also, judging from your username and from the message at Image:Logo KNEIP.gif—"Logo, created by KNEIP. The author and CEO gave me the right to use it."—you appear to be affiliated with the company, which constitutes a conflict of interest. As such, I would suggest not editing material related to the company on Wikipedia. If you have any further concerns, please feel welcome to raise them here. --Slowking Man 15:43, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

OK it is to late now to lie I am pursuing an internship at KNEIP. But is conflict of interest a crime as such (I am doing an internship and will leave the company in 2 months so actually I do not care personnaly)? I tried to take pure promotional or advertisement content out of my page. KNEIP actually is an important actor of the Luxembourg fund industry: 3i recently invested 37 m in it (this was in my second version of the page), it created a profit association (IMS Luxembourg) aimed at promoting corporate social responsibility, and all big banks are its clients (JPMorgan, Citigroup, ....),  : is it not sufficient to consider it notable and write an article about it? Barbarakneip 16:16, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Well, no, it's not a "crime." However, Wikipedia's policies advise against making substantial edits in subjects where one has a conflict of interest, as it is often difficult to edit neutrally in such cases. It does sound as if the company may be notable, but I would suggest allowing someone else to create an article on it. If you have some reliable sources for information on the company, I'd be interested in seeing them; I might take a stab at beginning an article on the company. --Slowking Man 16:35, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Well then, that seems fair, I will gather everything I can and let you know.Barbarakneip 09:04, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Redirect of Keentoons

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Keentoons, by Graeme Bartlett (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Keentoons is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Keentoons, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Please note, this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Keentoons itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. --Android Mouse Bot 2 05:51, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Screenshot71.PNG

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Screenshot71.PNG. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Angr 06:44, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Bret Harte Middle School (San Jose, California)

Thanks very much for patiently reverting the vandalism by Tapeontheshoe in the article Bret Harte Middle School (San Jose, California). Whoever it is, he/she deserves a ban, but I am powerless to do so myself. Is it possible you can arrange for a ban? He/she may strike again, and I am worried, being a student at the school myself. If it is convenient, please reply on my talk page. Regards, Danny Sepley 20:47, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Page protection

Thanks for protecting my page tonight. However, would you mind removing it tommorow after whatever is going on blows over. I subscribe to DerHexer's view that if a vandal is hitting my page, that's a good thing. It means that they aren't off vandalizing a legitimate article. Thank you again! No problem. I've just changed it to expire in 24 hours. --Slowking Man 06:29, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] AfD nomination of Difficulty level

An editor has nominated Difficulty level, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Difficulty level and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:00, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
