[edit] History

Slovenská sporiteľňa is the bank with the longest tradition of savings institutions in Slovakia, which is going bank to 19th century.

In modern times the bank was at first part of Československá štátna sporiteľňa (Czechoslovak State Savings Bank), established in 1953. Since 1969 it commenced an independent operation as Slovenská štátna sporiteľňa (Slovak State Savings Bank).

Changes after the year 1989 reflected also liberalisation of the financial sector, which resulted in increasing competition. In 1990, Slovenská štátna sporiteľňa attained universal banking license and widened its activities also to the segment of institutional and corporate clients.

Tha bank entered the Slovak money and capital markets in 1991, when these markets came into being. In 1994, Slovenská štátna sporiteľňa was transformed in a joint-stock company and started its activities under the brand name of Slovenská sporiteľňa (Slovak Savings Bank).

Transformation process in Slovenská sporiteľňa started in January 2001, immediately after the signing of the Share Purchase Agreement by the majority shareholder of Austrian Erste Bank, which has a leading position in retail banking in Central Europe.
