The fourth studio album by American metal band Slipknot is scheduled for release on August 26, 2008 by Roadrunner Records.[1] Noted to have begun preparation in October 2007, recording was due to begin in January 2008, but was pushed back to February.[3] It will be the band's first studio release since 2004's Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses), making it their fourth studio album as well as the first musical output from the band since Corey Taylor and Jim Root's mainstream success with Stone Sour, Joey Jordison's stints with Korn, Ministry and 3 Inches of Blood, Shawn Crahan's side project Dirty Little Rabbits and Sid Wilson's solo project.

[edit] Background information
[edit] Release date
Slipknot released a statement, proclaiming fans should not believe everything they read, concerning touring and recording; adding that the only official source is direct word from the band.[4]
Online retailers have the release scheduled for August 11, 2008 in Europe and August 12, 2008 in North America.[5] However, on January 17, during an interview at the 2008 NAMM Show, guitarist Mick Thomson stated, "Whatever bullshit's on the internet, it's most likely not true. We're gonna start recording it in February, be on the road by July and hopefully the record will be out in September".[3]
On May 5, 2008, a message was released from Paul Gray concerning his recent marriage; he also stated, "We are almost finished with the new album and it fucking smokes! Right now we are finishing up on guitar solos and all the extra stuff, but trust me it rules!"[6]
On June 3, 2008, Slipknot uploaded an image onto their MySpace profile, which shows the masks seen in previous splash teasers lying scattered on a set of stairs. Above is a sign that reads "all Hope is gone." At the bottom of the Slipknot sign the word "Summer" appears.
It has been announced by Blabbermouth.net that "a heavier track" from the album will be sent to radio stations on June 15, 2008, and the official first single from the album will follow on June 30. It was also mentioned that the band plans to reveal the album's title "any day now."[1]
[edit] Style
For this release, the band has displayed interest in making it their heaviest album to date. They plan to include an expansion on the thrash metal riffing that was displayed on Volume 3, as well as more guitar solos. However, they also want to make it their most experimental record, and will be including more acoustic guitars and melodic vocals. During an interview in the February 2008 edition of Revolver, percussionist Crahan expressed a willingness for him and fellow percussionist Chris Fehn to experiment with hi-hats and cymbals which has been absent in the additional percussion in any previous work.[7]
“ | Oh, I’ve got an absolute ton of stuff, man, I got three notebooks of ideas from the past year and a half alone. It’s so great, I think we’re gonna do something really different with this album. Different, but brutal. | ” |
— Corey Taylor
|
“ | It's going to be heavy as fuck! It's going to be heavier than 'Vol. 3...' but just as weird and as experimental. We have a whole bunch of song titles, but nothing I wanna say right now. | ” |
— Joey Jordison

It was also rumored that, due to the members being unmasked in their side projects, Slipknot was going to be recording and touring this album unmasked. However, these rumors have been dismissed by many band members. Percussionist Shawn Crahan addressed this issue during an interview on The Sauce when discussing the release of their 2006 DVD release Voliminal: Inside the Nine.[8] Bassist Paul Gray confirmed during an interview that the band will be returning with a new image; regarding the masks, he stated, "It'll still be Slipknot, but we're gonna upgrade, step things up a little."[9]
In an interview on May 13, singer Corey Taylor described the album as a "dark cross" between the band's two most recent studio albums,
“ | "It's going to rip your face off...I don't think the world will be ready for this album." | ” |
— Corey Taylor[10]
|
Taylor, whose lyrics have traditionally been about his life, stated this album's lyrics will be less about his life and more, "bitching about what's wrong in life..."[10] Crahan said that the album is different than their first three because its "...done by a bunch of crazy guys in their 30s. That doesn't mean we're slowing down or not as intense — our brains are different, so we're bringing different emotions, different feelings and different anxieties to the table now. This record is another diagnosis of our insanity."[11]
[edit] Producer
During an interview in 2006, Corey Taylor expressed a somewhat negative response to their experience of working with producer Rick Rubin on Slipknot's 2004 studio album Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses).[12] During an interview in 2008, Gray said the band was deciding between Dave Fortman and Sean Beavan. It was later announced that the band are to head into the studio in February with producer Dave Fortman.[2][9]

[edit] Splash teasers
Beginning on April 1, 2008, Slipknot's official website has displayed splash teasers to promote the upcoming album. As of June 6, 2008, there have been 8 splash teasers:
- On April 1, 2008, Slipknot's official website began displaying a splash teaser featuring what has been speculated to be new masks or insight towards the album's cover.
- On April 10, 2008, Slipknot's official website began displaying a splash teaser of a member of the band running through a farmyard.
- On April 19, 2008 Slipknot added yet another teaser picture to their website; this one showed all 9 band members staring down at the camera with masks that resemble the ones shown in the earlier teasers.
- On April 21, 2008, Slipknot's official website began displaying a different picture with this splash teaser, containing an image of a member of the band lying in a creek.
- A fifth picture was displayed on April 30; featuring a member inside a large pipe.
- Yet another splash teaser was released on May 9, displaying a member jumping into a pond, with water splashing. After the audio track accompanying the teaser picture ends, a video appears of what seems to be the farm and creek in the previous photos. A piano, as well as what seems to be a dead snake are also shown.
- On May 20, the sixth audio and seventh picture teaser which features a picture of a masked member sitting in an unknown structure with an abundance of leaves inside was released.
- On June 6, the eighth teaser was displayed on the official website. It shows a member standing next to a tower and what looks like a house or barn. This teaser does not have an audio track.
Each splash teaser is accompanied by a different audio track, other than the one released on June 6.
