[edit] March 2008 Butthole surfers edit
Regarding your edit sometime in March on the Butthole surfers. You say they were not Hardcore punk in their early days correct? I noticed you deleted that little tidbit that was thrown in there.I think you should really hear the stuff they made in their first first years. Just listen to the 1982 demos and tell me those werent pure hardcore. If you can find them.And if not hardcore, explain to me, what genres would the songs "Hate my Job" and "Suicide" go under?
regards.

[edit] Dignity (album)
Hi. Regarding your edits to Dignity (album): in accordance with Wikipedia:Manual of Style (flags), flag icons should not replace country names in single and album article infoboxes—they are meant to help the reader rather than decorate, and removing the country name will prevent the reader from learning quickly what country each flag is representing. Also, Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums states that only the earliest known date that an album was released should be specified in the infobox, with additional dates listed in a "Release history" section in the article. Thanks. Extraordinary Machine (talk) 01:24, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Flag icons in info boxes
Hi, nice work, but just a note that per Wikipedia:Manual of Style (flags)#Summary, point 4:
- "Flag images, especially flag icons in biographical infoboxes, should not be used to indicate birth or death places, as this may imply an incorrect citizenship or nationality."
I think they're not for use in band info boxes either, but I'm not certain, so I've left a note for someone who will know at User talk:John#Flag in band info boxes. Tyrenius (talk) 16:15, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for all your good work, SlayerXT. The MoS is ambiguous about flags in band infoboxes but there is a project consensus not to use them this way. There is no extra information in United States that is not in United States. Best wishes, --John (talk) 16:27, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
- The thing to remember is that as an encyclopedia for adults, we mainly rely on text to get information across. We also need to cater for people with low bandwidth, disabilities etc. Another problem is that of over-emphasising nationality, which using the flag will do. In general, we don't use things just because (in some people's opinion) they make the article look nicer. See also WP:PRETTY. Best wishes, --John (talk) 16:45, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Handy hint
As a courtesy to other editors, it is a Wikipedia guideline to sign your posts on talk pages, user talk pages, and WikiProject pages. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and the date will then be automatically added along with a [[timestamp] when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). For further info, read Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines. Thank you. Tyrenius (talk) 17:17, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Guide to referencing
Click on "show" to open contents.
Using references (citations) |
---|
I thought you might find it useful to have some information about references (refs) on wikipedia. These are important to validate your writing and inform the reader. Any editor can removed unreferenced material; and unsubstantiated articles may end up getting deleted, so when you add something to an article, it's highly advisable to also include a reference to say where it came from. Referencing may look daunting, but it's easy enough to do. Here's a guide to getting started.
A reference must be accurate, i.e. it must prove the statement in the text. To validate "Mike Brown climbed Everest", it's no good linking to a page about Everest, if Mike Brown isn't mentioned, nor to one on Mike Brown, if it doesn't say that he climbed Everest. You have to link to a source that proves his achievement is true. You must use reliable sources, such as published books, mainstream press, and authorised web sites. Blogs, Myspace, Youtube, fan sites and extreme minority texts are not usually acceptable, nor is original research, e.g. your own unpublished, or self-published, essay or research.
The first thing you have to do is to create a "Notes and references" section (unless it already exists). This goes towards the bottom of the page, below the "See also" section and above the "External links" section. Enter this code:
The next step is to put a reference in the text. Here is the code to do that. It goes at the end of the relevant term, phrase, sentence, or paragraph to which the note refers, and after punctuation such as a full stop, without a space (to prevent separation through line wrap):
Whatever text you put in between these two tags will become visible in the "Notes and references" section as your reference.
Open the edit box for this page, copy the following text (inserting your own text where indicated), paste it at the bottom of the page and save the page:
(End of text to copy and paste.) It should appear like this:
You need to include the information to enable the reader to find your source. For an online newspaper source, it might look like this:
When uploaded, it appears as:
Note the single square brackets around the URL and the article title. The format is:
Make sure there is a space between the URL and the Title. This code results in the URL being hidden and the title showing as a link. Use double apostrophes for the article title (it is quoted text), and two single quote marks either side of the name of the paper (to generate italics). Double square brackets round the name of the paper create an internal link (a wikilink) to the relevant wikipedia article. Apostrophes must go outside the brackets. The date after The Guardian is the date of the newspaper, and the date after "Retrieved on" is the date you accessed the site – useful for searching the web archive in case the link goes dead. Dates are wikilinked so that they work with user preference settings to display the date in the format the user wishes.
You can use sources which are not online, but which you have found in a library or elsewhere—in which case leave out the information which is not relevant. The newspaper example above would be formatted like this:
When uploaded, it appears as:
Here is an example for a book:
When uploaded, it appears as:
Make sure you put two single quote marks round the title (to generate italics), rather than one double quote mark.
These formats are all acceptable for dates:
You may prefer to use a citation template to compile details of the source. The template goes between the ref tags and you fill out the fields you wish to. Basic templates can be found here: Wikipedia:Template messages/Sources of articles/Citation quick reference
The first time a reference appears in the article, you can give it a simple name in the <ref> code:
The second time you use the same reference in the article, you need only to create a short cut instead of typing it all out again:
You can then use the short cut as many times as you want. Don't forget the /, or it will blank the rest of the article! A short cut will only pick up from higher up the page, so make sure the first ref is the full one. Some symbols don't work in the ref name, but you'll find out if you use them. You can see multiple use of the same refs in action in the article William Bowyer (artist). There are 3 sources and they are each referenced 3 times. Each statement in the article has a footnote to show what its source is.
The above method is simple and combines references and notes into one section. A refinement is to put the full details of the references in their own section headed "References", while the notes which apply to them appear in a separate section headed "Notes". The notes can be inserted in the main article text in an abbreviated form as seen in Harriet Arbuthnot or in a full form as in Brown Dog affair.

I hope this helps. If you need any assistance, let me know. |
[edit] Notability of Burning Organ (band)
Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Burning Organ (band), by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Burning Organ (band) seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Burning Organ (band), please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Thanks for uploading Image:Doug aldrich.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. [edit] Replaceable fair use Image:Duff_mcKagan.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Duff_mcKagan.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
- On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Nv8200p talk 02:18, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Note
Do not add flags to artist infoboxes (See: WP:MOSFLAG. Also do not wikilink years any musician or album infoboxes. By the template rules unless a year has a specific month and day along with it... it doesn't get linked. Also, music labels use "piped" links. Example [[Mercury Records]] would be [[Mercury Records|Mercury]]. Read WP:ALBUM for all the guidelines regarding album infoboxes. Some of you edits are passable. But most undo the rules set down by WP:ALBUM. Example for genres only the first word in the first genre is capitalised. Any second/third genres must be lowercase. And all field entries are seperated by commas and not coded breaks. The guidelines for musician boxes specify all field use commas except genres which do not have a written specification. The consensus for the genre field is commas and to be consistent with the rules in place at WP:ALBUM genres, especially if there are more than 2, should be seperated by commas. If there are only 2 genres in place it doesn't really matter. If commas were there then leave them there. If a coded break was there it is OK to leave it alone. Please read all these rules and understand them so that all your edits don't have to be corrected... or in many cases... reverted completely. It's a shame to put effort into doing something when your contributions are just going to be reverted. If you read and follow the rules your edits will be allowed to stay. 156.34.222.121 (talk) 13:58, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Can you please write an edit summary when you edit articles? You never write it and i see that you have been already asked to do it. It is much easier to follow Wikipedia when editors provide an edit summary. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 15:09, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Speedy deletion of Nail Within
A tag has been placed on Nail Within requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for musical topics.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. BigDuncTalk 14:46, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] June 2008
Welcome to Wikipedia. Please do not remove Articles for deletion notices from articles, or remove other people's comments in Articles for deletion debates, as you did with Nail Within. Otherwise, it may be difficult to create consensus. If you oppose the deletion of an article, please comment at the respective page instead. Thank you. BigDuncTalk 18:34, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but you removed a speedy deletion tag from Nail Within, a page you have created yourself. If you do not believe the page should be deleted, you can place a {{hangon}} tag on the page, under the existing speedy deletion tag (please do not remove the speedy deletion tag), and make your case on the page's talk page. Administrators will look at your reasoning before deciding what to do with the page. Thank you. BigDuncTalk 18:35, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Speedy deletion of Nail Within
A tag has been placed on Nail Within, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where an article has substantially identical content to that of an article deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. [edit] Proposed deletion of Nail Within
A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Nail Within, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? BigDuncTalk 08:17, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

- Please do not remove the notice I have placed on the images. If you dispute the tagging, please add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|Your reason why a free replacement can not be found or created}} to the image page. As non-free images of living people, they must adhere to the non-free content criteria. These images fail the first criterion "No free equivalent", as freely-licensed equivalents could be found or created. Please ask me on my talk page or at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions if you have any questions. mattbr 14:37, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Proposed deletion of The Fading
A proposed deletion template has been added to the article The Fading, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.
