This page blank for 24 hours to honor the memory of Wei Wenhua.

Freedom of speech is a fundamental human right. I encourage Wikipedians who think the same thing to join me in this quiet small way to say to the world: Wikipedians stand with the right of individual everywhere to report on the facts of the world in peace.

China blogger beaten to death by government officials

Normally this page is used to communicate with me about various issues, and of course it will resume as such after the 24 hours. But I am going to be travelling from San Francisco to Dubai (which takes about 24 hours on the route I am taking) and so I would not see people's comments until then.

In this case, the Chinese government is doing the right thing: they are detaining the officials responsible for this, and it seems likely that there will be a murder trial. But I humbly ask the Chinese government to consider taking steps to ensure that freedom of speech for the people of China is more protected. Stop censoring the Internet. Change laws to give strong protections to people who are speaking the truth. Do it for the interests of China. Do it because it is right.

Wei Wenhua, the people of the world appreciate you.--Jimbo Wales (talk) 00:13, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
