Slattery's People

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Slattery's People was a 1964-1965 American television series about local politics that starred Richard Crenna as the title character James Slattery, co-starred Ed Asner and Tol Avery, and featured Carroll O'Connor and Warren Oates for a couple of episodes each. Crenna had earlier appeared in several television series, including The Real McCoys opposite Walter Brennan, and went on to play Rambo's commander in the 1980s movies, while Asner later played Lou Grant both on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Lou Grant, one of the few times a leading character went from a half-hour comedy to an hour-long drama, and the only time this was done with the character being played by the same actor. Slattery's People is mainly notable for having been one of the extremely rare American television series spotlighting the travails of local politicians, a topic that TV shows of the period mainly avoided.
