From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Great Seal of Wikipedia is an award in recognition of substantial contributions by a Wikipedian to articles relating to the United States Government. The award was created by Skyler1534 for recognition of contributions related to the United States Supreme Court Case Article Improvement Project, but is intended to serve as recognition for contributors to articles related to any branch of the U.S. Government or its history.

[edit] Recognition
The purpose of the award is recognition of individual accomplishments within the Community. It serves as a great incentive for Wikipedians to work hard and increase the quantity and quality of articles about the U.S. Government on Wikipedia because they know their contributions are being acknowledged and appreciated. It is limited to U.S. Government articles because it was the opinion of Skyler1534 that the general public has far too little knowledge about what their government does for them and how it works. These contributions help both the contributor and the reader to better understand the topic of the article.
[edit] Nomination process
The Seal is an honor and a motivator, but is not meant to be given out liberally. The award should only be given to Wikipedians who:
- copy-edit or proofread large amounts of articles,
- originate or contribute large portions to at least five (5) articles or,
- exhibit great leadership or recruiting efforts
After at least 2 Wikipedians have received this award, all future awards shall be given through nomination on the award talk page. In order for a Wikipedian to receive the award, the nomination must have at least one supporter and no opposition among previous award recipients. If these conditions are met after the nomination stands for a period of 2 weeks, the recipient will be notified on their user talk page.
Anyone may nominate a contributor (including non-registered users). Only previous recipients may voice their support or opposition to the nomination.
No Wikipedian may be nominated for their first star more than once within a 90-day period unless the previous opposition is rescinded. No previous award recipient may be nominated more than once within a 75-day period and subsequent stars should require more work than the first as criteria for nomination.
[edit] Special considerations
- If a nominee is being blocked from receiving the award by opposition from one or more previous recipients, they may still be granted the award if they receive the support of at least 75% of all previous recipients. In the case of voting, recipients may cast the number of votes equal to the number of stars they have. The required 75% will be based on the total number of stars awarded. Previous recipients are not required to vote and no vote (for whatever reason) will be considered an abstention from voting. The 2 week voting period will not be extended under any circumstances.
[edit] Image
The award image is based on the Great Seal of the United States. The Seal has on it written, "E Pluribus Unum". This is loosely translated below the Great Seal of Wikipedia and reads "One Out of Many" to signify the recipient being singled out for a short time from the rest of the Wikipedia Community. Above the Seal is a row of stars (1-5) to show the number of times the Wikipedian has been recognized with the award. The background color also changes for every star addition.
