Skyview High School is a high school in Vancouver, Washington, USA, located on 1300 NW 139th Street, in the Salmon Creek area of northern Vancouver. Constructed in 1998, it is the newest of six high schools to be built in the Vancouver School District. The New Building design includes the use of many windows and large open classrooms. The building also contains a 1400-seat Auditorium, which has hosted speakers such as Howard Dean. This auditorium, along with the Lower Gym, is used to host productive assemblies which earnestly attempt to encourage their students that their lives amount to some higher destination and to possess greater aspirations for their future in leading positive, faithful, honest, virtuous and community-serving lives.

Skyview's Marching Band the Skyview Storm Marching Band has been competing in the open class division for 5 years (as of Summer 06); with membership from 120-200 in the past years.

Skyview is home to Vancouver's SMT (Science Math Technology) Magnet. Skyview High School currently offers 14 AP (Advanced Placement) courses. Course availability is dependent upon student enrollment.

The mission of Skyview High School is to personalize the high school experience of each student by focusing upon academic, career, personal and social learning and developmental needs. Students will be provided with powerful and exciting learning through meaningful work and individual research on real world topics.

ASB, NHS (National Honor Society), Speech and Debate, DECA, Model United Nations (MUN), Key Club, SHF/French Club, German Club, Math Team, Science Olympiad, Step Team, A/S/L Club, Red Cross, Diversity Committee (DivCom), Peer Mentoring/Leadership, Drama Club, Knowledge Bowl, Graphic Design, and Yearbook.


[edit] Science Bowl

The Skyview High School Science Bowl Team of 2006-2007 won the BPA Regional Science Bowl, besting other teams from prestigious schools in the area. The team (consisting of Robert Fiszer, Christopher Wyszynski, Kunal Vaswani, Brian Tang, and Dan Woodman) received scholarships and a free trip to Washington, D.C. for the national competition.

At the national competition, Skyview won 4 out of their 7 round-robin matches.

[edit] Knowledge Bowl

Thus far in the 2007-2008 school year, the Skyview Varsity Team One placed 2nd (losing to Mountain View High School by one point) in the Vancouver School District Knowledge Bowl Competition hosted by Skyview High School in November. In December at the district competition Skyview Varsity Team One achieved first place, just barely beating Mountain View by one point. The lineup of Varsity Team 1 is Andrew Read (captain), Brian Tang, Dan Woodman, and Lizzie Wulf.

Skyview High School sent both Knowledge Bowl varsity teams to the state competition in the 2006-2007 school year after taking second and fourth place in the Washington Regional Knowledge Bowl Competition. At the state competition, varsity team one, consisting of Robert Fiszer, Kunal Vaswani, Lizzie Wulf, and Christopher Wyszynski, placed fourth; varsity team two, consisting of Brian Tang, Steven Tsai, Randy Powell, Shane Smith, and Dan Woodman (not present at state competition), placed eleventh.

In 2002 the varsity team won first place in the state competition, the first state-title of any Skyview sports or activities.

[edit] Tennis team

The Skyview High School Ladies Tennis Team won the 4A Greater St. Helens League award during the 2005-2006 season. The team included Abby Olbrich, Sarah Click, Catherine Cloakey, Heather Daniels, Carly Wagner, Lauren Hobson, Shauna Church and Erin Hessler. During Districts, the Skyview Tennis team also placed 1st (Abby Olbrich and Sarah Click, both who later went on to be a State qualifiers) and 2nd (Heather Daniels and Catherine Cloakey) in the doubles draw. Skyview's no-cut policy for the tennis team was recognized by the United State's Tennis Association.

[edit] Model United Nations

MUN is a club where students take on the role of a delegate to the United Nations. By seeing the world from a different perspective and advancing the goals of another country, students broaden their horizons and gain a more complete understanding of the challenges faced by mankind. Students discuss such issues as international conflicts, refugees, extreme poverty and hunger, environmental issues, and globalization.
