Skjold, Rogaland

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Skjold is a former municipality in Rogaland county, Norway.

It was created as Skjold formannskapsdistrikt in 1837. The district Tysvær was separated from Skjold in 1849 to constitute a municipality of its own, and the same thing happened to Vats in 1891. The divisions left Skjold with a population of 1.961.

On 1 January 1964 the districts of Liarheim and Langeland with 1.262 inhabitants were merged with Sandeid and parts of Imsland and Vats to create the new municipality Vindafjord. The districts Dueland, Grinde and Yrkje, with 1.133 inhabitants, were reunited with Tysvær. At the same time an uninhabited part of Skjold was moved to Sveio municipality in Hordaland.

The village Skjold is presently located in Vindafjord, in the end of the Skjoldafjord inlet.
