[edit] Non-free/fair use media rationale in Skippy (comic strip)

Although this image is subject to copyright, it is covered by US fair use laws because:

  1. The image is only being used in the article about the comic strip Skippy for informational and educational purposes.
  2. Use of the book cover visually identifies the book, its author, and the comic strip in a manner that mere prose cannot, and meets all criteria in WP:NFCC.
  3. This image enhances the article in which it's displayed, as it provides an immediate relevance to the reader more capably than the textual description alone.
  4. The image is not replaceable with an uncopyrighted or freely copyrighted image of comparable educational value.
  5. The image is the primary means of visual identification of the article topic.
  6. The image is a low resolution image of the book cover, in an inferior graphics format (JPEG).
  7. The image is only a small portion of the commercial product.
  8. The use of this image will not affect the value of the original work.
  9. The use of this image will not limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute or make a profit from the original. In particular, copies could not be used to make illegal copies of the book.

[edit] Source

  1. Derived from a digital capture (photo/scan) of the book cover (creator of this digital version is irrelevant as the copyright in all equivalent images is still held by the same party). Copyright held by the film company or the artist. Claimed as fair use regardless.
