Death Valley - California - Skidoo Mining
District was one of the last gold mining efforts in Death Valley. Gold deposits were discovered in 1906. The town of 23 Skidoo grew to almost 500 people by the following year. Production of gold ore continued intermittently until the rich gold veins played out in 1917. Today the town of 23 Skidoo consists only of a few ruins. The ruins of the mine's ore processing works are shown here. 23 Skidoo, or just Skidoo, probably got its name from the usage of the phrase of "23 Skidoo" by police in New York City who used to say "23 Skidoo" when chasing women-watching men away from the Flatiron Building (at the intersections of 23rd Street, Broadway, and 5th Avenue in Manhattan).
