Skanderbeg Military University is a military academy in Albania. It has around 500 students across four academic years, who attend Management and Electronics Faculties. The fourth year was added in September 2007, bringing the student body up from 350. It is named after Skanderbeg, a fifteenth-century Albanian military and national hero. The institution is among the nine SIFE accredited universities in Albania.
[edit] Education
After the completion of a 4-years study cycle, students are awarded with a university diploma recognized as equivalent to the diplomas obtained at the country’s universities system and are commissioned Officers.
[edit] Troop schools
The graduates of the Military University, after achieving the rank of Second Lieutenant, go directly to the Troop schools to attend the Basic Officer’s Course, which provides them with the necessary knowledge on respective specialty.
After a 4 to 7 years work experience period, Lieutenants attend the Advanced Officer’s Course, divided in two phases:
- Consists on general program of military education (theoretical part) and takes place at the Defence Academy
- Concentrates on specialty training, and takes place at the Troop Schools.
(Starting from 2007, all the training is taking place at the Troop Schools).
[edit] Defence Academy
The Defence Academy conducts:
- Basic Course for Staff Officers
- General Staff Officer’s Course
- Higher Officer’s Course
- Senior Course for security and defence studies (recent)
- Short term courses and seminars (based on needs).
During the Academic 2006-2007 year, the Defence Academy conducted two Staff Officer Basic Courses and one General Staff Officer Course. The General Staff Officer’s Course was conducted with a revised curriculum, improved in order to achieve NATO countries standards. This course is followed by the Higher Officer’s Course, which completes the Military qualification system in the Albanian Armed Forces.
