Skaga stave church
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Skaga stave church is a reconstructed stave church in Tiveden, Undenäs, Karlsborg municipality, Västra Götalands län county, Sweden.
The church is from 2001, but its design traces back to 1130 when the first church is said to have been built by a Skaga, the daughter of the Viking Ramunder the Evil.
According to folklore, the church was forgotten during the Black Death, which devastated the area and made it uninhabited, but rediscovered by two bear hunters several centuries later.
During the 19th century the church administration in Skara decided to demolish the church. One of the reasons is said to have been its bad state of preservation, another one punishing the locals for persisting heathen beliefs in the area (see also Trollkyrka).
In 1950, the church was reconstructed and in 1960, it once again became a parish church. In 2001 the church was destroyed by fire, but was yet again reconstructed.
