[edit] The authority of the Bible
Hi Sjoh0050. I've replied to your response at Talk:Presbyterianism. I just wanted to point out that I'm only trying to state the view of the Westminster Standards. I'm not interested in having a go at people who may hold different views to what I believe the Standards say.
The quote you mentioned from the United Reformed Church 'Basis of Union' has a lot in common with the Question 3 of the Larger Catechism: "
Q. 3. What is the Word of God?
A. The holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testament are the Word of God, the only rule of faith and obedience."
The two quotes agree on this point: the Bible should always be the supreme authority.
(The ‘Basis of Union’ quote mentions “the help of the Spirit”. Some people might use this to say, "The Holy Spirit told me not to believe (or obey) this or that part of the Bible.” However, God does not change His mind, so the Holy Spirit cannot contradict the written Word of God. “I the LORD do not change” Malachi 3:6, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change” James 1:17 (ESV).)
This is what I believe that the Westminster Standards teach, in line with the Word of God. I trust that this will not cause offence to you, but that we will both be able to continue contributing happily to Wikipedia. Blarneytherinosaur 01:40, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
