Sixel is a graphics format supported by terminals and printers from DEC, most notably the VT320 and VT420. It was later replaced by ReGIS.
A sixel is a the smallest addressable pixel group. It consists of six pixels on a vertical row. When the monitor (or printer) is in sixel mode, each 8-bit character is interpreted as a sixel. A monitor will typically support a width of 800 sixels and a height of 480 pixels.
