Louise

I'm happy to inform you that we'll be bearing a version of your uncle's artwork on our Team's jerseys again for the 2008 OLA Jr. B Lacrosse Season. We revised it a bit to avoid any conflicts with other parties who claim to hold copyrights to it. We've utilized it proudly in our event flyers, programs etc. We're honoured to be associated with your uncle's artwork and to know we have your permission to do so. We'd like to make reference to your uncle and his artwork in our season's program. Some background, history etc. It would only be fitting if the words came his family. Could you submit a article to be entered into our program. Thanks and Have a Great Day

What you have attached is only part of my uncle's artwork. The warrior head is definitely his. The sunbursts are similar, but the words "Six Nations" are not part of his original piece and are not placed where he had them.

While I have copyrighted his writings, I have found that many people are selling this flag - you can see just how many if you log into e-Bay and I have also found some flag companies are carrying it! My uncle's intent for the flag was for any Indians to use it if they wanted to...which is why I have never put any copyrights on it exclusively.

It wasn't his intention on this particular piece as he felt that - back in the 1970s when he created it - few Indian nations had their own flag and he felt that all nations should have a flag - especially during the height of AIM demonstrations and such! So he designed this flag for anyone who wanted to fly it. Of course, I'm sure he would wish that it wouldn't have been changed so much - some have taken bits of it and used it to their specifications and today, many Indian nations have developed their own national flags. Can't blame them since the image my uncle had on the flag is definitely Iroquois!

As far as I am concerned, you can use the flag and fly it high and put it on your jerseys! He'd be delighted! Lacrosse was one of his favorite sports! And as a member of the Iroquois Confederacy and ESPECIALLY as a member of the Mohawk Nation - he designed the flag for you to use and use it PROUDLY.

I don't know who this person is who claims to have the copyright on it - but that person will have great difficulty stopping all the people who DO use and sell this flag! Whoever might have put a copyright on it - if they in fact did - has no right to do so - unless they are trying to make money on it or trying to stop people from using it. Neither of which was my uncle's intention when he designed it.

Good luck! Let me know if there is anything more I can do to help. Louise.Team use of Logo with permission

Replaceable?

Because it is a logo there is almost certainly no free equivalent. Any substitute that is not a derivative work would fail to convey the meaning intended, would tarnish or misrepresent its image, or would fail its purpose of identification or commentary.

Other information Use of the logo in the article complies with Wikipedia non-free content policy, logo guidelines, and fair use under United States copyright law as described above.
