Situation Hopeless ... But Not Serious is a 1965 film directed by Gottfried Reinhardt and starring Alec Guinness.
Guinness plays Wilhelm Frick, a German villager who keeps two American pilots (played by Mike Connors and Robert Redford) prisoner in his basement after they parachute out of their aircraft during World War II. Frick's incentive to keep the Americans locked up is largely a desire for companionship, and for that purpose he considers keeping them imprisoned even after the war has ended.
The author and actor Robert Shaw wrote the screenplay, which he developed from his 1960 novel The Hiding Place.
