[edit] Discussion

Seriously, who wrote this, their publicist? --Closedmouth 12:03, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

For a good example of how to write an article about a band see Cibo Matto --Closedmouth 12:07, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
maybe you missed the part in the article that says it's 1.) a stub and 2.) "[info from sirsy.com]"--GURT 14:50, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
this page should be deleted. the band does not meet Wikipedia:Notability (music) at all. the links to the band members should go too. all of the commercial and sales links at the bottom of the page are obnoxious. i wont cut them out now but suggest whoever posted this page read the rules and make it wiki compliant before it gets recommended for speedy deletion, which it deserves.
  • you're out of your mind.. they meet more than the one required criteria of Wikipedia:Notability (music). also theres nothing "commercial" or anything to do with "sales" in any other the links other than their website. you're erasing things that are totally legit and are part of other wikipedia projects not to mention be able to be used in a proper article and cleaned up eventually. Members of the bands mailing list will soon know that this page needs to be edited to fit better into wikipedia, but it's not going to happen in an instant, so how about you just keep your pants on instead of having a meltdown over a stub.--GURT 19:39, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
  • May I make some gentle suggestions? I just watched another Albany band's page that I had originally written go through the deletion process, and it was pretty unpleasant, honestly. Getting a lot of people from Sirsy's website to show up and vote isn't going to help your cause . . . I was accused of being a "sock puppet master" because a lot of first-timers logged in to argue the band's case, without any prior wikipedia history. I would suggest you explain which notability criteria they meet in the article, explicitly, and make sure the page is as neutral as possible. I am inclined to agree, though, with angry poster above that all of the myspace and street team and store links are a bit much, since as he notes you can get to them from the band's page. I also think the press kit quotes after the introductory paragraph set you up for valid complaints regarding NPOV. Just because other wiki's do it doesn't make it right. It would be a much stronger wiki page without them. I would very much like to see as many Albany based bands as possible on Wikipedia, since I think there's important, notable stuff happening around here. Hopefully getting this page into more clearly explained notability/NPOV format will discourage someone from going after it with speedy delete or AfD. Good luck. --Gnhn 20:47, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
  • no ones trying to "[Get] a lot of people from Sirsy's website to show up and vote"..more like trying to find people that can write this article properly. there isn't currently and never was any links to a store. the press kit quotes were removed minutes after i made my previous comment in this discussion. the musicbrainz template is legit.calling the rest of the links "commercial" and "obnoxious" doesn't really seem like much of a reason to delete them. I've read the wikipedia information regarding external links and made appropriate changes trimming them down somewhat to what i feel is okay within those boundaries. if anyone wants to trim further i feel that maybe they should also have a look at those guidelines as well to refresh their knowledge of the matter before they do. i don't see why anyone wants to nuke a stub that has been around for over a year and has people willing to correct it and write it properly.--GURT 21:47, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
  • Hey, I'm just sharing my observations, and I'm not the guy who posted the original complaint or hacked out the links, so don't get all defensive when I'm just offering advice based on my own experience with having a page I cared about deleted. When you say "members of the band's mailing list are going to know" . . . that's exactly what happened to me: I told a mailing list that the page they cared about was going to be deleted, they showed up to show their support, and it made the situation worse, not better. Also . . . if a stub has been around for over a year and hasn't moved beyond the stub stage, and contains exclamation points, a list of press clips and questionable links, then I'm not really sure how you can say "it has people willing to correct it and write it properly." If so, why haven't they proven it over the past year? So, you know, knock yourself out if you want to start to swinging at people who are offering constructive criticism as well as people who are just being tools . . . I'm not strongly invested either way, other than (as I said) wanting to see the Albany music community well represented in Wikipedia, since I have a whole lot of experience and time dedicated to it over the past 15 years or so (including having worked with Sirsy). I'd sincerely like to see them keep a page here, but it's gonna take more than getting their mailing list riled up or posting street team links (which I still feel do NOT belong, at all, in an encylopedia, since they are purely promotional)(and, yes, I've read the guidelines) to keep it here, now that someone has cast the hairy eyeball on it and tagged it as lacking in neutrality or notability. I don't have any other comments on the matter, except to repeat: Good luck. --Gnhn 22:24, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
  • Okay, I've beefed up the article with what I know about them. I deleted the SUBSIDIARY links from the Sirsy.com page (left Myspace and other independent links). There's just no reason to list their street-team and downloads and press kit as separate links in Wikipedia, when they are INSTANTLY accessible from the top bar in their webpage. Makes it look less like a obsessive fan page and more like an encyclopedia entry. I think their pedigree and exposure via film and television bolsters their case for retention more than their press clips and street team do.--Gnhn 23:26, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
Well done. That's the kind of thing I was looking for when I tagged the article. --Closedmouth 01:37, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
  • Thanks. Someone still seems bound and determined to turn it back into fanboy central though, it seems, based on edits since I touched it this afternoon. Not sure why the pre-Sirsy Shania connection was removed. That's 100% factual (I reviewed the precursor band for Metroland), and it's a good link from a notability-defense standpoint. Talking about the cover songs they do, on the other hand, is NOT . . . no matter how much you may enjoy them. In any event, I think I'm done with it at this point. --Gnhn 02:38, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
  • The article is awesome. I am sorry if i came off defensive. your advise is noted. i wanted to make my reasons clear even if they were wrong.. because i didn't feel they were coming in that way. your suggestions are noted, and your help in getting this article moving in the right direction is appreciated.--GURT 04:42, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Sirsy.png

Image:Sirsy.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
