Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School is part of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board and it is located in the suburbs of Fallingbrook, Orleans, Ottawa, Canada. Sir Wil, as it is called by most of its students, is run in a semestered system, and is one of the top tech schools in the city. Its sports teams, which are almost invariably called the Lancers, are home to some of the most talented athletes in Orléans and are one of the top teams of any high school in Orléans. In fact, their junior boys football team won their division championship this year. The 2005-2006 school year introduced a new principal to Sir Wil, Ms. Patsy Agard.

Mrs. Gage, the former principal, changed the school hours to 8:40 am - 2:45 pm. Currently the school has approximately 1300 students. The 2005-2006 year was the final year of Mrs. McLeese's time as vice principal at Sir Wil; her replacement as of the 2006-2007 year was Ruggles Prichard.

In the 2005-2006 school year, the school was one of the first to participate in the first Canadian Cappies (Critics and Awards Program For High School Students) program, an American based theater review program where student critics from schools all over the Ottawa region review student productions with the chance of having their reviews published in the Ottawa Citizen.

The school has a thriving drama program. Some of their recent productions include:

2008: The Music Man, by Meredith Willson; directed by M. Minter
2007: Oedipus the King, by Sophocles; directed by M. Minter,
2006: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, by Tom Stoppard; directed by B. Laugher
2005: Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare; directed by M. Minter
2004: The Crucible, by Arthur Miller; directed by H. Massie

The 2006-2007 year sees older groups, such as ESNCE, You ROCK and Student Council working alongside newer groups, such as the Leadership class and the Time Enough For Love initiative. Several events have been held throughout the year, ranging from dances, to leadership camps, to the popular overnight Fast to Feast, which raised money this year for Tibetan senior citizens.

[edit] Eric Shaw

Sir Wil made headlines in December of 2006 when the school held a mock telethon for CHEO (Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario.) This telethon, directed towards the hospital's Oncology ward, was headed by Sir Wil student Eric Shaw. Shaw was a cancer survivor, but had suffered a relapse earlier in the year. News struck home when, for the third time, Shaw was diagnosed with cancer. The brave student came to school every day of the telethon, however, and managed to encourage students to raise more than $15 000 for CHEO. Eric missed the last portion of the telethon as he was in hospital undergoing surgery for his cancer. Although the operation was considered a success, the cancer proved more aggressive than previously thought; Eric Shaw passed away on January 12th, 2007, at the age of 17.
