Sir David Graaff, 3rd Baronet

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sir David de Villiers Graaff, 3rd Baronet (b. 3 May 1940) is a South African landowner and the head of De Grendel wines.

The son of Sir de Villiers Graaff, 2nd Baronet, he was born in 1940, after his father left to serve in the North African campaign. Sir de Villiers became a prisoner of war in 1942, and would not meet his son until 1945.[1] David took his undergraduate degree in agriculture at the University of Stellenbosch, preparatory to a career in farming, but also read Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Magdalen College, Oxford and studied at the University of Grenoble. Like his father, he at one time entered South African politics, but withdrew in 1988.[2] However, his principal occupation was farming, raising table grapes in the Hex River valley.[1] When he inherited the baronetcy and the family estate of De Grendel in 1999 upon his father's death, he decided to experiment with viniculture and winemaking. Several De Grendel wines won medals at the South Africa Young Wine Show in 2004.[2]

Sir David has four children by his wife, Sally, the eldest of whom, de Villiers, is heir apparent to the baronetcy and farms Sir David's property in the Hex River valley.[2]
